Sophie Thatcher reveals Companion scene that was “playing in my nightmares”

Sophie Thatcher, known for her roles in gripping films and series such as “Yellowjackets” and “Heretic”, found a particularly unsettling scene in the production of “Companion” to be quite terrifying, causing her sleepless nights.

In this freshly praised blend of horror and science fiction, Thatcher portrays Iris – a robot companion to Josh (played by Jack Quaid). During a relaxing weekend retreat with companions, Iris discovers her genuine identity following a distressing event.

As a gamer, let me tell you this: In the thrilling world of “Companion”, we’re saving the big reveals for when you play it yourself. But I can give you a sneak peek at one intriguing moment – there’s a scene where Iris delivers lines in German. Seems simple enough, right? However, for our main character, it’s as chilling as facing a boss level!

“It was playing in my nightmares every night, the German scene,” Thatcher told Digital Spy.

Initially, we discussed the topic, but there was a pause of six months before we were scheduled to film it. This gave me an opportunity to refine my approach. Whether I’ve truly “perfected” it remains to be seen.

Quaid stated that Thatcher delivered an exceptional performance in this scene, and it undoubtedly ranks among the most memorable moments, of several, in the movie “Companion.

As a gamer, I’ve got to admit, that was the toughest challenge yet. But boy, did it make the victory sweeter! You see, throughout the day, we were playing catch-up, struggling to keep up with our schedule. We had only one shot for the wide view and another for the close-up, which really amped up the intensity of the moment.

If anything, it turned out to be beneficial for us, though it was quite technical. However, I’m grateful I had a dialect coach to help me through it.

Besides being fluent in German, the Companion provided Thatcher an unprecedented chance to explore playfulness, something she had not experienced earlier.

She mentioned that she wasn’t fully aware of who Iris was initially, and it turned out that Iris herself wasn’t certain about her own identity either.

Initially, there’s an airy quality about her, and I find myself gravitating towards more somber roles. However, this film takes a turn towards darkness, yet it was intriguing to explore that initial lightness.

Her transformation throughout the story is truly remarkable; she becomes an entirely new character. It was enjoyable to plot her development, improvising as I went along, and filming it sequentially definitely added to the experience.

Companion is released in cinemas on January 31.
