Sony’s Venom franchise just did something nobody saw coming
As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over three decades under my belt, I can attest that Venom has always been a wild card in the Marvel universe. But boy, does he know how to deliver on the unexpected!
Venom is a wildcard character. Since his inception in Marvel Comics, this has held particularly true, but it has become even more evident since he started leading his own movie series. He’s unanticipated, erratic, and consistently refuses to do anything other than keep us on our toes. And he does so, repeatedly.
Despite receiving unfavorable reviews from critics (all three films have been panned), Sony’s Venom series has proven to be a hit among audiences. Fans generally appreciate these movies, finding them entertaining rather than high art. They understand they aren’t dealing with masterpieces, but they do acknowledge that the Tom Hardy-led productions offer classic, old-school fun. In terms of delivering outlandish and unconventional adventures, Venom stands alone, usually living up to its promise.
In cinemas this past October, the third part of the series titled “Venom: The Last Dance” was unveiled, seemingly wrapping up the franchise with a heartfelt and powerful ending. Yet, true to form, the symbiote character Venom from Sony has surprised fans yet again in an unexpected manner.
Venom 3 is the second-highest-grossing superhero movie of the year
Despite initial expectations suggesting a strong showing at the box office for “Venom: The Last Dance,” the movie has persistently been a hit for Sony since its debut. It stands out as one of the most stable performers this year, avoiding both underperformance and complete flops that have plagued other films during the same period. Although it’s projected to conclude as the lowest-grossing film in the Venom series, this is acceptable given its financial stability.
As of November 25, the film has earned $456.4 million, currently ranking as the tenth highest-grossing movie of the year. However, its position may not last long, as movies like “Wicked,” “Gladiator 2,” and “Moana 2” are gaining momentum at the box office, while “Moana 2” is expected to add more luster to the list soon. What’s surprising about it making this list is not its critical acclaim, but rather the relatively weak competition it seemed to have encountered from other films within its genre.
In this tale, it turns out that Venom 3 outshone the wrath of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a long-awaited sequel that surpassed expectations and earned an impressive $451 million (nearly $400 million more than its first installment). However, upon closer inspection, it’s revealed that the film not only outperformed its predecessor but also managed to secure the runner-up spot among comic book/superhero movies for the year.
Indeed, while the movie “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” released in 2021 shared a similar approach, the storyline you’re referring to now is distinct from that one. Interestingly, there was a comic book film anticipated to surpass “Venom 3”, but it didn’t quite meet expectations. That film, of course, was DC’s “Joker: Folie à Deux”. Despite the impressive performance and Oscar nominations of its predecessor, this sequel unfortunately underperformed at the box office.
In the past, the anticipation was high that this film would compete with the likes of Deadpool and Wolverine as the top comic book blockbuster this year, especially considering the success of Marvel Studios’ movie which shattered numerous R-rated records initially set by Joker in 2019. However, things didn’t go according to plan, paving the way for Venom to outperform expectations. Admittedly, it didn’t require a significant effort, but it managed nonetheless and even surpassed those expectations, briefly making it into this year’s Top 10 list.
Originally slated for release this year, two additional Marvel Studios superhero films (“Captain America: Brave New World” and “Thunderbolts”) have been pushed back to next year. This means “Venom” won’t face as much competition from these titles in 2023. Similarly, the Sony Spider-Man film “Madame Web,” which underperformed earlier this year due to poor reviews, is less of a concern for “Venom.” While “Kraven the Hunter” might surpass expectations this year, it’s unlikely to reach the box office success of “Venom 3.
Lo and behold! Venom has once again taken everyone by surprise. In a year that was initially expected to be quite different for the movie industry, there could have been several Marvel Studios films among the top 10 highest-grossing movies of the year, Joker 2 might have matched its predecessor’s performance, and perhaps even some films from the former DC Extended Universe would have been released. However, none of these scenarios came to pass, leaving the way clear for Venom: The Last Dance to replicate its predecessor’s success and end the year as the second-highest-grossing superhero film.
The power of Venom!
