Sony’s Next Spider-Man Spinoff Movie Will Make Marvel History (Report)

A recent rumor suggests Sony’s upcoming Venom movie will be a first for the broader Marvel universe. While Sony has successfully created movies based on characters connected to Spider-Man, like Venom, other attempts to build a villain-focused universe haven’t fared as well – films like Madame Web, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter received poor reviews. Although Sony previously seemed to be moving away from these spin-off films, a new and potentially groundbreaking project has emerged.

According to a new report, Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, known for their work on Final Destination: Bloodlines, are creating an animated Venom movie for Sony Pictures. While it’s not yet known if this animated film will tie into the live-action Venom movies starring Tom Hardy, he’s anticipated to participate in the project somehow.

Okay, so the buzz about the new Spider-Man spin-off just keeps getting more interesting! Daniel Richtman is reporting that they’re actually aiming for an R-rating for the animated movie. If it happens, this new Venom flick would be a first for Sony and Marvel – the first ever R-rated animated movie under the Marvel banner. Pretty wild, right?

Marvel’s animated movies have mostly gone straight to video or TV, though there have been a few exceptions in theaters, like Sony’s Spider-Verse films and Disney’s Big Hero 6.

Venom’s Animated Movie Could Be the Knull Epic That Was Promised

It’s unexpected that Sony seems open to making an R-rated animated Venom movie, considering the live-action films were all rated PG-13. Many fans were disappointed by this, particularly because the villain Carnage was known for being very violent in the comics and sequels.

It’s currently unclear if the next Venom movie will continue the story with Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock or start fresh with a new actor. The ending of Venom: The Last Dance hinted at the arrival of Knull, a powerful symbiote, so Sony might be using the next film to finish that story arc.

According to Daniel Richtman, Sony is developing a movie centered around Agent Venom, a character from the comics where Flash Thompson merges with the Venom symbiote. Tony Revolori, who plays Flash Thompson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has expressed his desire to portray Agent Venom, leading to speculation that the upcoming animated movie might feature this version of the character.

If Sony continues the story of Venom with a new animated film that follows the events of The Last Dance, they could also introduce other characters like Madame Web and Morbius in smaller roles to connect different storylines. However, Venom will remain the central focus, and the movie will finally show off his more violent side.

Big animated movies often take years to make – the recent Spider-Verse films from Sony Pictures, for example, were four years apart. Because Sony’s animated Venom movie is only just starting development, it likely won’t be released until 2030 at the earliest.
