SEGA appears to be winding down support for its classic Sonic the Hedgehog mobile games. Both Sonic the Hedgehog Classic and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Classic now display messages indicating that service will soon be discontinued.
Okay, so it hasn’t been officially said yet, but I just saw a message in the game itself confirming that the online features are going away. The good news is we’ll still be able to play the games, just not online, unfortunately.
Both games were part of the Sega Forever initiative that kicked off in 2017
Wario64 first spotted that the mobile versions of both Sonic games may soon be removed from app stores. As of today, however, they are still available to download and can be claimed for free.
SEGA recently updated the free versions of their iOS games to remove ads. It’s unknown if Android users will get the same update, but in the past, SEGA has often removed ads and in-app purchases before taking games off app stores completely.
Both Sonic games were included in Sega Forever, a 2017 program by SEGA to bring back classic games on Android and iOS. These games were available as free downloads with ads. The service eventually offered over 30 retro titles, letting players enjoy Genesis and arcade classics on their smartphones.
Starting in September 2023, SEGA began removing several of its older “Sega Forever” games without making any official announcements. They simply took the games off app stores, disabled online features, and stopped updating the games’ social media pages.
In 2025, even more classic games were removed after their in-app purchase options were taken away, and then disappeared from app stores. It now looks like Sonic the Hedgehog Classic and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Classic will soon be removed as well.
I suggest you quickly check your app stores and download these games before they’re removed. You can find Sonic the Hedgehog Classic and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Classic on both Android and iOS.
