It’s crucial for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 to stick with the movie franchise’s debated plotline rather than letting it go, given how adaptations of video games can be unpredictable among fans who know the original content well. Unlike most other adaptations, the Sonic the Hedgehog film has been exceptionally popular among its longtime supporters, including myself. The online community of Sonic enthusiasts have debated both the advantages and disadvantages of various aspects, such as Sonic’s character development and maturity, that deviate from the games.
Although many people acknowledge that the Sonic the Hedgehog films have a unique perspective due to their strong adherence to the original source material, one aspect that continues to spark debate among fans is the presence of human main characters in the live-action movies. While some enthusiasts advocate for the exclusion of humans in Sonic 4, it would be counterproductive to disregard this element in the film series as a whole.

The idea that Sonic games shouldn’t incorporate human characters holds water, considering the fact that up until Sonic Adventure, Doctor Eggman was the sole human character. Although humans started appearing more frequently from Sonic Adventure to Sonic ‘06, they are not typically the central figures of these games. Interestingly, humans seem to vanish again after that point. The initial TailsTube addressed the discrepancies concerning human characters by pointing out that in the Sonic universe, the characters reside on islands, while humans inhabit continents (as reported by ComicBook.com).
There’s been talk about a possible Sonic movie focusing solely on the animal characters, like Amy Rose, with Dr. Robotnik being the only human (if he manages to survive Sonic the Hedgehog 3). I believe it would be a significant error to exclude the human characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 entirely.
In another perspective, it’s clear that some people might feel annoyed by humans dominating screen time in the Sonic the Hedgehog films, but at this point, reversing course seems impractical. The movie series has been constructed around Sonic discovering a new family on Earth, and his bonds with Tom and Maddie are as essential to the live-action Sonic’s character growth as his ties with Tails and Knuckles. Moreover, numerous fans have developed strong connections with the Wachowskis. Personally, I may not feel a deep bond with Tom, but I would be one of those protesting if they were to eliminate Maddie or Agent Stone.

These characters act as mentors for Team Sonic, offering advice and serving as a moral guide. In the midst of action scenes, Maddie and Tom take on more of a supporting role, helping Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles with their mission without overshadowing it entirely.

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I must say this new Sonic film stands out for me because it’s the first time in the franchise where humans, other than Robotnik, aren’t the central characters. This change feels like a smart move following the feedback about the extraneous wedding scenes in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 seemingly taking that lesson to heart.
In this movie, Tom gets just seven minutes of screen time, and Maddie even less. But the clever balance here allows each member of Team Sonic to truly shine, while their proud parents look on from behind the scenes.
There’s Just One Way Sonic 4 Could Get Away With Not Having Human Characters
Team Sonic Would Need To Leave Earth To Abandon The Human Characters
In supporting the creative team’s decision to exclude human main characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, it’s crucial they handle this delicately. Eliminating human characters in future Sonic films might be achieved by writing them off, but given the light-hearted tone of the franchise, I believe the Wachowskis’ demise would be too grim. Moreover, an opportunity to take this route was somewhat missed in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 when Tom got hurt. However, there’s a less somber alternative that won’t disappoint fans – setting Sonic 4 on another planet instead.
In the finale of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”, the action shifts to an out-of-this-world setting – a welcome change from the two and a half films that took place on Earth so far. Although we’ve seen Mobius and the Mushroom Planet, there are countless other cosmic destinations waiting to be discovered.
In another scenario, instead of sticking to the game’s narrative, the writers could have Team Sonic bid farewell to the Wachowski family at the beginning of the movie, then journey through space for the rest of it. Or, if they choose the path of “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” and go with the “Sonic CD” approach, they could send Team Sonic off to Little Planet early on. However, I believe it would be beneficial to frame the story with their departure from the Wachowskis and their return, making the family a constant base for Team Sonic. This way, both Team Sonic and the audience can maintain a sense of continuity throughout the story.
