Sonequa Martin-Green expected seven seasons of Star Trek: Discovery

As a dedicated fan of Star Trek: Discovery, I was just as shocked as the cast and crew when the sudden news of its cancellation after filming season five hit the headlines. I had grown fond of the characters and their stories, and I was looking forward to seeing where they would go in seasons six and beyond.

As an avid Star Trek: Discovery fan, I was taken aback just like many others when the sudden announcement came about the show’s cancellation after season five. Even the cast and crew, who had wrapped up filming only a few months prior, were expecting to resume production in eight months for season six. Sonequa Martin-Green shared this information during her recent appearance on The D-Con Chamber podcast with Dominic Keating and Connor Trinneer. When Keating asked if she believed the series could have continued for seven seasons, Sonequa didn’t hesitate to express her thoughts.

As a dedicated fan, I can share that Martin-Green confirmed our suspicions: they’d been informed that season five would be Discovery’s last. For us behind the scenes, it was business as usual, with two more seasons to push the boundaries even further. But then, unexpectedly, we received the devastating news that Discovery had been cancelled.

Of course. And we had been told as much. So it was an afterthought. So season 5 was just the next season, and we went bigger than we had ever gone before. It was like, ‘See you in 8 months, and it’ll be great.’ And then we found out [Discovery was ending].

Due to the efforts of Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise, the cast was given the opportunity to reassemble and shoot the series finale, providing resolution for all character arcs. This extra scene added approximately nine to twelve pages to the script. Nicole Mehrtens (Martin-Green) was thankful for this chance.

If Discovery and Lower Decks are both ended after five seasons, it seems this will be the norm for Star Trek shows on streaming. However, Paramount might make an exception if a certain series garners substantial viewership. Currently, Strange New Worlds is that successful show, having already been renewed for its fourth season and consistently improving with each new season.

It’s unfortunate that Discovery was forced to conclude its series in such an unexpected manner, despite being given the chance to finish up. The sudden cancellation left both the show’s critics and devoted fans feeling let down. Although there were those who criticized the show, it also had a loyal fanbase. And unfortunately, they too, were taken by surprise. However, could this be the last we see of Discovery’s crew? Could a streaming movie be in their future? With Paramount+ combining forces with Skydance, the possibilities seem endless.
