Some SNL Fans Are Worried About Colin Jost’s Future On The Show, And They Could Have A Point
Over two decades ago, Colin Jost joined the team at Saturday Night Live. He’s held several roles as Head Writer and has often been mentioned as a potential replacement for Lorne Michaels when he eventually steps down from his creator and showrunner duties. However, some die-hard SNL fans are speculating that his time with the show might soon be drawing to a close.
Last week, a buzz was sparked when it was revealed that SNL would be hosting Walton Goggins and Scarlett Johansson to conclude the season. While I’m a fan of Walton Goggins, let’s focus on Scarlett Johansson for now. It’s worth noting that she is married to Colin Jost, who will reportedly be doing Weekend Update for his 200th time during the Season Finale. This has led some people to speculate that her appearance might serve as a grand farewell for her husband, giving him an impressive send-off.
For quite some time, Jost appeared to be an integral and long-term member of Saturday Night Live. Discussions about him leaving the show seemed unrealistic, but his recent interviews suggest that the prospect isn’t as far-fetched as it once seemed. Last week, he attended Brown University for a lecture series and was interviewed on numerous topics. Among these was his parents who met at Brown, and he also answered questions from students. Here’s how the university newspaper summarized his response regarding his future…
As Jost carries on with his duties at SNL, he expressed feelings of being swamped by the uncertainty of what lies ahead in his career. With the tasks of creating a TV pilot, managing an advertising firm, acting and writing for films, penning novels, and filming a stand-up comedy special, there are many uncertainties awaiting him.
His statement isn’t a firm promise to remain at Saturday Night Live for the rest of his life, and it’s not dissimilar from other vague responses he’s given in recent years. Last year, during an interview with Howard Stern, he mentioned that he decides on a season-by-season basis based on whether he’s still having fun or not. This doesn’t read as if he’s made a lifelong commitment to the show or told the network he’d eventually take over the entire production.
Given all that’s been discussed recently, it’s no wonder that the whispers about Jost departing have grown increasingly loud. One of the most popular comments under SNL‘s post announcing its upcoming hosts hinted at Jost’s potential departure. A Reddit discussion speculating the season finale could be his last episode garnered over a thousand responses. There have been several articles questioning whether he’s on the verge of leaving, and if you browse through X, you’ll find numerous posts from users who believe he’s already finished with the show.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to say, it’s all quite ambiguous whether he’s truly done something or not. Just because there seems to be smoke doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a roaring fire. It’s just as plausible that everyone is blowing this out of proportion. Scarlett Johansson, one of the biggest names in Hollywood, is gracing our screens this summer in the new Jurassic Park film. Given her history with the show and her stardom, it wouldn’t be surprising if she were chosen to host the season finale. Having her on isn’t some exclusive favor to Jost; it’s simply a smart choice for great television.
Beyond this, although the comedian has been somewhat elusive about his future on Saturday Night Live (SNL), he’s made it unmistakably clear that he adores hosting Weekend Update. Over recent seasons, he’s minimized some of his duties for the show and has expressed a desire to achieve a healthier work-life balance. Indeed, he’s engaged in numerous other projects, but the remarkable aspect of SNL is that it provides ample summertime and multiple weeks off, allowing comedians to focus on additional endeavors. This flexibility seems to be one of the key reasons why many popular comedians stay with the show for extended periods.
In essence, while some spectators believe that Michael Che might be leaving Saturday Night Live soon, many others consider this speculation to be overblown. Personally, I lean towards the idea that he’s likely to stay put, but there is indeed a hint of smoke suggesting otherwise. Ultimately, we can only guess for now and time will tell if he decides to move on.
