Zack Snyder was key in creating the first shared universe of superhero films with the DC Extended Universe. Beginning with Man of Steel, he brought a distinct, darker style to these classic comic book stories, exploring complex questions about their place in the world. While he still has a dedicated fanbase, his involvement with DC ultimately ended following the troubled production of Justice League.
Even after Zack Snyder left, the DC Universe he started continued with different directors. Now, James Gunn and Peter Safran are leading the DC franchise, aiming to build on what Snyder’s previous attempt didn’t achieve. Interestingly, the new DC Universe is still using characters and ideas from the often-debated earlier films.
Peter Safran Produced Multiple DCEU Films
As a huge DC fan, I’ve been following James Gunn and Peter Safran’s moves at DC Studios closely. Safran’s basically in charge of figuring out where the whole superhero universe is going, which is a massive job! But even before taking the reins at DC Studios, he was a key producer on a bunch of the DCEU films. I remember when he first started producing with Aquaman – that movie ended up being a huge hit and really launched that corner of the DC universe.
The 2018 film helped brighten the tone of the DC Extended Universe after some earlier, darker movies. Safran also produced the sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, along with the Shazam! films and The Suicide Squad. He’s continuing in this role, having first joined the DCEU some time ago.
Junkie XL Scored Batman v Superman and the Snyder Cut Before Supergirl
Following his work on The Dark Knight Trilogy, Hans Zimmer continued his collaboration with DC, composing the score for Man of Steel. Later, when DC decided to reimagine Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,
Hans Zimmer collaborated with Tom Holkenborg, also known as Junkie XL, after Holkenborg’s acclaimed work on Mad Max: Fury Road. Zack Snyder then hired Holkenborg to compose the score for his Justice League movie, but without Zimmer’s involvement. Since then, Holkenborg has continued to score several other superhero films.
Multiple Actors Reprise Their DCEU Roles in the DCU
As a big DC fan, I’m really glad the new DCU is keeping some connections to the old SnyderVerse! It’s cool they’re bringing back some of the same actors to play the characters we already know and love. Even though the official start of the DCU is with Creature Commandos, it’s awesome to see someone like Margot Robbie continuing her role from David Ayer’s Suicide Squad – it feels like a nice nod to what came before.
The DC Universe will also feature well-known characters like Peacemaker, played by John Cena, and Blue Beetle, played by Xolo Maridueña. While some actors are returning to reprise their roles, DC Studios has cast new actors for iconic characters like Superman and Lex Luthor.
Several DCEU Actors Play New Roles in the DCU
Even though Jason Momoa is finishing his run as Aquaman in the old DC Universe, he’ll still be part of the new one. He’s set to play Lobo, starting with the Supergirl movie – a role many fans, including Momoa himself, have long imagined him in. So far, he’s the only actor from the Justice League to get a new role in the DCU, but he isn’t the only actor from the previous DC movies joining the new franchise.
James Gunn often works with the same actors, and many of them are now appearing as new characters in the DC Universe. Sean Gunn had a small role as Calendar Man in The Suicide Squad, voiced Weasel, and now has a larger part as Maxwell Lord. Michael Rooker played Savant in Season 2 of Peacemaker and provided the voice for Sam Fitzgibbon in Season 1 of Creature Commandos.
Andy Muschietti Is Still Set To Direct The Brave and the Bold After The Flash
The DC Universe isn’t just bringing back familiar actors; it’s also working with directors who have previously contributed. Andy Muschietti, after a long and troubled development process, was the director who finally completed The Flash movie. Despite receiving mixed reviews and failing to perform well at the box office, DC Studios still…
The new movie will be the first time audiences see the DC Universe’s version of Batman, and it will also introduce the character Damian Wayne. Although some people had concerns about director Andy Muschietti, the positive response to the recent IT: Welcome to Derry series has eased those worries.
The Brave and the Bold’s Christina Hodson Wrote Several DCEU Movies
Andy Muschietti isn’t the only person with experience in the DC Extended Universe working on The Brave and the Bold movie. After keeping the writer of the new Batman film a secret for months, James Gunn finally revealed that .
Christina Hodson has contributed to multiple DC films, including The Flash and Birds of Prey. She wrote the Batgirl movie, which was ultimately canceled, and helped develop other DC projects that never came to fruition, such as a Gotham City Sirens project with Margot Robbie. Currently, she’s writing The Brave and the Bold and has been a key creative voice within the new DC Universe (DCU) since its inception.
James Gunn Directed One of the Best DCEU Movies
James Gunn is now the leading creative voice of the DC Universe, but he first gained widespread recognition for his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies at Marvel Studios. He then transitioned to DC in 2018 to direct The Suicide Squad.
Following the disappointing response to the first Suicide Squad movie, The Suicide Squad offered a fresh start. Although it wasn’t connected to the new DC Universe, it showcased James Gunn’s talent and ultimately led to him being chosen to lead the entire DC franchise a few years later.
