A biopic about Snoop Dogg’s life and impressive 30-year career is in the works. Director Craig Brewer, who previously directed films like Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name, will be at the helm. He intends to create a similar feel to the hit movie Straight Outta Compton. Development began in June 2025, and the script is being written by Joe Robert Cole, known for his work on Black Panther.
While speaking with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant about his new movie, Song Sung Blue, director Antoine Brewer discussed the upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic. He explained that, although his film will offer a fresh take on Dogg’s life, it will still share connections with the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton, where Snoop Dogg was portrayed by LaKeith Stanfield.
Director Brewer highlighted that Snoop Dogg has “a compelling life story,” especially during his youth at age 19, and that the upcoming biopic will focus heavily on that period. He also confirmed that J.D., who was cast shortly after Brewer joined the project, is diligently preparing to portray the rapper.
I recently spoke with Snoop, and I have a feeling you’ll be amazed by some stories he hasn’t shared before.
Snoop Dogg made a short appearance in Straight Outta Compton after Dr. Dre, played by Corey Hawkins, left N.W.A. and started Death Row Records with Suge Knight, The D.O.C., and Dick Griffey. This led to a collaboration with other rappers, including Tupac and Dogg himself, and the film showed them working on their famous hit song, “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang.”
Considering his career began at Death Row Records, it makes sense that the story of the upcoming biopic shares similarities with Straight Outta Compton, especially since the same studio, Universal Pictures, is making both films. However, the director has stated he’ll offer a fresh perspective, so it’s doubtful any actors from the 2015 film will return to play Dre, Knight, or other characters; Brewer is expected to cast new talent.
According to Brewer, the upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic will concentrate on his early life, including some difficult periods. The film will cover the legal troubles Snoop Dogg faced both before and after becoming famous – including a murder investigation from which he was cleared – and how those experiences led him to leave gang life. Unlike some biopics that avoid controversy, this film promises to be honest and realistic, which should make it stand out.
