Aimee Lou Wood Criticized SNL’s White Lotus Parody
In a recent conversation, Yang acknowledged that Wood was justified in expressing her dissatisfaction over the SNL joke.
Yang expressed that it’s entirely reasonable for someone to respond however they do to a sketch. It’s essential to remember the personal, emotional impact such content can have on individuals. He suggested that reminders about the boundaries of parody are necessary, as comedians should acknowledge when they might be overstepping the mark, rather than justifying their actions by claiming it’s merely part of the culture.
Saturday Night Live Has Faced Backlash Many Times in the Past
Critics Have Hit Out at the NBC Sketch Show for Political and Celebrity Humor Over the Past 50 Years
- Eddie Murphy famously complained over a 1996 sketch where David Spade referred to him as “a falling star” after a string of box office bombs.
- Guest Host Woody Harrelson was criticized for a 2023 monologue joke where he compared the COVID-19 pandemic to a drug cartel.
- During February’s 50th anniversary special, R Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, for including the singer in a faux-‘In Memorial’ montage alongside problematic figures like O.J. Simpson and Robert Blake.
Nonetheless, the comedian clarified that the portrayal of The White Lotus on SNL was not intended as a cruel critique of Wood.
“We just think that she should be so proud of the work that she put into this season,” she said.
“You need those reminders every now and then that parody can go too far sometimes.”
Previously, Wood expressed her displeasure towards a specific SNL joke, as she was an ardent admirer of the program.
In the honesty setting, I felt that the SNL skit was harsh and not amusing. I felt justified in my opinion, but I may remove it later,” she posted on Instagram.
Later on, she expressed numerous messages expressing agreement with her grievance, saying: “It’s really unfortunate because I enjoyed it immensely a fortnight ago. Indeed, poke fun, that’s the purpose of the show, but there should be a more intelligent, subtle, and less crass approach taken, don’t you think?
She mentioned that she is not sensitive or easily offended. In fact, she enjoys a bit of friendly teasing when it’s well-played and good-natured. However, the humor was centered around fluoride. It’s just that she has a noticeable gap between her teeth, not poor dental health.

After the uproar, Wood shared on her Instagram Story that she had been given a bouquet of flowers, which seemed like an olive branch.
“Thank you for the beautiful flowers,” she wrote.
One of the people who stood up for Wood was actress Jameela Jamil from The Good Place. She expressed her dislike of the parody of White Lotus on her Instagram Story, saying she “really hated” it.
“[Her teeth] are not the most striking or memorable aspect when it comes to this exceptional actor. She reminds me of our next Olivia Coleman. Funny, profound, vulnerable, and endearingly lovable is how I’d describe her.”
In the second part, Jamil criticizes the societal standards that we often ridicule women for their assimilation, yet obsess over anyone who presents with slightly unusual features, compared to the typical beauty standards we’ve unknowingly accepted. He goes on to say: “We make fun of the way women conform, and then ruthlessly fixate on anyone exhibiting even the slightest deviations from these arbitrary AI-influenced ideals that have infiltrated our world as women.
In a recent interview on, Wood expressed that the conversation about her teeth brought back a sense of completion or coming full circle for her, as she had been bullied over this very issue during her childhood years.
Wood expressed astonishment at the surprising effect his teeth were having. He added that even the Americans are amazed, yet they’ve been gracious about it. It’s as if he exclaimed, “Oh my goodness, it feels so wonderful.” It’s a truly satisfying experience – a full circle moment.
