“Smiling Friends” is coming to an end.
Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack have announced that their adult animated comedy series will conclude after three seasons. They revealed the news through an audio message shared on Adult Swim’s X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube channels.
Okay, so I was really shocked to hear this, but Hadel just announced that ‘Smiling Friends’ is going to end after Season 3. They were super clear – this isn’t a prank or anything, it’s the real deal. It’s really sad news, but at least we’ll get one more season!
Cusack acknowledged the news was likely upsetting, explaining that after completing Season 3, both he and Zach felt exhausted from years of dedication to the show, but also proud of what they’d achieved. They simply reached a point where they felt it was a natural ending point after three seasons.
Using exquisite corpse, ‘The Elephant’ tells a captivating story about reincarnation
Animators who have worked on “Adventure Time,” many of whom also created their own successful shows, have collaborated on a unique special that delves into topics like who we are, death, and being reborn.

“Smiling Friends,” which began in 2022, centers around Pim, Charlie, and their coworkers at a company dedicated to making people happy. The latest season premiered in October.
Hadel said that from the start, he and Cusack agreed to give the show their all and end it while it was still good. They preferred to leave fans wanting more rather than have people wonder why it was still on the air and losing its quality.
The team behind the show “24/7,” who also provide many of the voices on the program, decided it was time to finish after years of production. They didn’t want to continue unless they could maintain a high quality and avoid delivering something disappointing to their fans.
Cusack admitted it felt strange to make this choice, but confirmed it was their decision. He also said Adult Swim was understanding and hasn’t ruled out a potential return. ‘We might create more episodes down the line if we want to,’ he explained, ‘but it’s also possible we won’t. We’ll have to see what happens.’
Channeling Adult Swim, Netflix’s ‘Strip Law’ gets crude in the courtroom
Netflix’s animated comedy for adults can be a bit crude and disrespectful, but it really picks up momentum thanks to its talented voice actors, including Adam Scott, Janelle James, Keith David, and Stephen Root.
Although there aren’t any current plans for more seasons of “Smiling Friends,” creators Cusack and Hadel confirmed they’ll continue to work together on future projects. As a treat for fans, two extra episodes will be released on April 12th.
Although these are the last episodes of “Smiling Friends” being made, creator Michael Hadel doesn’t see them as series finales. He calls them the remaining episodes from Season 3, which don’t follow a single theme, but he’s confident fans will still appreciate them.
Adult Swim is incredibly proud of the work Michael and Zach did on ‘Smiling Friends’ and appreciates their unique and innovative approach. The network, which prioritizes creator-led projects, recognizes that the show wouldn’t have been possible without their vision and creativity. While Adult Swim and its fans are disappointed to see the series end, they respect Michael and Zach’s decision to conclude it with the final two episodes on April 12th, and they hope to work with them again in the future.
Hadel and Cusack ended their message by enthusiastically praising their team and encouraging others to consider hiring them.
The show has been the “ride of a lifetime,” Cusack said.
