Smile 3 is reportedly in the works, will the Smile curse go global?
As a die-hard fan of horror movies, particularly those that push the boundaries of fear and storytelling, the news about Smile 3 has me absolutely thrilled! The way Parker Finn handled the cliffhanger at the end of Smile 2 was nothing short of brilliant, and I can’t wait to see how he tackles a global scale with this curse.
It appears that we’ll be witnessing the aftermath of the concert at the end of “Smile 2”. Interestingly, Production Weekly has mentioned “Smile 3” as a project in development, with filming scheduled for 2025. While Paramount Pictures hasn’t confirmed this, the appearance in PW suggests that things are progressing positively in the production process.
Beyond the latest review, the film “Smile 2” has received both critical and financial acclaim. In various interviews, director Parker Finn has discussed possible concepts for a third installment. Notably, in the finale of “Smile 2” (SPOILER ALERT!), the entity murders Skye Riley on stage during one of her concerts, which theoretically makes every audience member its potential next victim. As a result, the entity could expand globally, spreading at an unprecedented pace across the world.
In an audacious twist at the climax of “Smile 2“, the creators took a significant risk, and while it wasn’t entirely unexpected, it remains a daring decision. This is because Finn now finds himself obligated to uphold a promise set for a potential third film. Will he succeed in crafting a story about a curse that seems to be sweeping across the entire globe?
It appears that for some time now, I’ve been mulling over the concept of exploring the edges of creativity, as I hinted at in my conversation with SFX magazine where I expressed my vision of a “dynasty of Smile movies,” each one more unpredictable than its predecessor. The idea that this film series could grow into a sprawling franchise is an exhilarating prospect.
Despite its ability to transform into various guises, what’s truly alarming about this entity lies in its authentic form. The very essence of this horrifying being, with the capacity to metamorphose into any individual and manipulate existence itself, presents a unique opportunity for thought-provoking and pioneering narrative exploration.
A few weeks post the theater release of Smile 2, Finn spoke to Collider regarding the film, hinting at various intriguing paths that any potential future Smile films might explore.
Both the original film “Smile” and its sequel delved into intricate, individual narratives, with the first movie centering around Sosie Bacon’s character Rose Cutter, while the second storyline revolved around Naomi Scott’s pop star persona Skye Riley. With the curse affecting a large crowd at a concert, it remains challenging for Finn to preserve that personal touch in future installments.
To Collider, he said that maintaining that sense of intimacy is important to him.
Smiling serves as a tool for expressing deep and meaningful character narratives, and I want to ensure that, even if multiple people share this platform, we manage to maintain an intimate connection in the storytelling process.
It seems challenging to execute such a feat given the multitude of potentially infected individuals involved, but I’m confident that Finn will come up with a solution, as he often manages to find ways where others might not see them.
