Smile 2 debuts with higher Rotten Tomatoes rating than Smile
As a horror fan who has been through the ringer with countless sequels that fail to live up to their predecessors, I must say I was pleasantly surprised by Smile 2. Having grown up on slasher flicks and supernatural thrillers, I’ve seen my fair share of derivative, uninspired follow-ups. But this sequel, penned and directed by Parker Finn, managed to not only maintain the creepy atmosphere but also bring something fresh to the table.
The sequel, “Smile 2”, brought even broader grins to the faces of horror enthusiasts compared to its original, boasting a higher Rotten Tomatoes rating than “Smile” on its premiere.
In the following year’s horror film sequel, the story revolves around renowned global pop artist Skye Riley (played by Naomi Scott). Her life takes a terrifying turn as she embarks on a world tour and comes face to face with the enigmatic, eerie grinning figure from the initial movie.
Once more helmed by Parker Finn, the sequel titled “Smile 2” debuted with an impressive 82% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is slightly better than its predecessor, which holds a Certified Fresh score of 80%.
Praise for Finn has been abundant as critics admire his dedication to expand upon the foundation laid in Smile. Meanwhile, Scott’s character Skye is being acclaimed as a fresh, complex figure in the horror genre.
Prior to its wide release, let’s explore the generally favorable comments critics have made about “Smile 2” and speculate if there’s potential for a sequel.

Instead of merely outdoing its precursor with innovative, chilling, and gruesome scares that are sharper than ever, it’s also the intricately complex female protagonist that gives this sequel a grittier, more sophisticated horror aesthetic.
Screen International
In the second installment of “Smile,” there are bold scenes, however, as the storyline presented by Finn unfolds with unlikely turns, it fails to instill fear or bring laughter, instead provoking a casual shrug.
IGN Movies
The creator behind the 2022 horror hit movie “Smile” has delivered a strong follow-up, where the specter of a phantom causing suicide is stalking a pop star portrayed with intensity and dedication by Naomi Scott, who was previously seen in “Aladdin.
Little White Lies
Despite some viewers finding the first hour reminiscent of the movie “Smile,” repeated, Parker Finn’s enthusiasm is undeniably commendable throughout it all.

The film doesn’t shy away from being overt; however, director Parker Finn demonstrates remarkable skill by making the real world seem like a dream, and dreams appear as if they were reality.
TheWrap
The sequel, titled “Smile 2“, offers an expanded version of the original content, but with a chilling continuity. It’s not only scarier, but also more feisty and humorous, demonstrating that the concept has both longevity and adaptability.
IndieWire
Above all, this sequel demonstrates the boundless adaptability that might make “Smile” films a consistent hit during October at the box office for many years ahead.
The Hollywood Reporter
Indeed, there’s a lot to appreciate in a director who isn’t afraid to step boldly, and the upcoming sequel is sure to bring wide grins to many horror enthusiasts.
Slant Magazine
Parker Finn, much like his character, tends to delve into the sensitive, vulnerable areas we usually try to conceal, savoring our distress as if it were nectar, and reminding us that frequently, the adversary we face is ourselves.
Observer
If you enjoyed the initial movie, you’ll find similar elements here. For those casual horror enthusiasts looking for some Halloween fun, this film should hit the spot.
