Smallville’s Tom Welling Suits Up As The DCU’s Most Anticipated Hero In Art Following Casting Comments

As a big fan of Tom Welling, I was thrilled to hear he’s potentially interested in joining James Gunn’s new DC Universe! It sounds like Gunn is really shaking things up with ‘Gods and Monsters,’ essentially rebooting a lot of our favorite characters. I’m especially excited to see David Corenswet take on the role of Superman, and it’ll be amazing if Welling could be a part of that new era starting in July 2025.

After playing Superman’s cousin, Clark Kent, on the show Smallville for ten years, artist Buffy2Ville created fan art imagining Tom Welling as Batman in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. The artwork depicts what Welling could look like in The Brave and the Bold movie. You can see the image below.

The image features the actor who plays Batman on TV, wearing his Batsuit and standing in Gotham City. In November 2025, the actor expressed his desire to reprise the role in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, which will include its own version of Batman.

Work on The Brave and The Bold movie is ongoing, and Andy Muschietti is set to direct the new version of this classic DC story. James Gunn has mentioned the script is being developed, but it’s currently unclear who the writer(s) are.

Many Hollywood actors, including Jonathan Bailey and Jensen Ackles, have said they’re interested in playing Batman. However, DC Studios hasn’t started casting for The Brave and The Bold yet, as the script is still being written.

Welling has expressed enthusiasm for a story exploring a multiverse featuring different versions of Superman, acknowledging he’s one of many actors who’ve played the iconic DC character. Although he isn’t currently part of the main DC Universe, the franchise has demonstrated a willingness to revisit and include actors from previous DC projects.

A release date for DC Studios’ The Brave and The Bold hasn’t been announced yet. The DC Universe will return in 2026, starting with the Supergirl movie on June 26th, followed by the Lanterns TV series in late summer, and Clayface on September 11th.
