Smallville Star’s Comic Debut Goes Full Gothic Horror in New Covers, First Look (Exclusive)

Even though Smallville finished airing 15 years ago, Kristin Kreuk is still involved with comic books. She’s teaming up with Peter Mooney and Eric Putzer to create a brand new gothic horror series called Black Star, which will be released by Titan Comics in July. The comic, featuring artwork by Joe Bocardo, draws inspiration from Canadian folklore. ComicBook is giving fans an exclusive first look at the comic and its exciting new cover art.

The five-part comic series, Black Star, takes place during the early 1800s, amidst the world of the fur trade. It’s been described as a blend of The Revenant and the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The story centers around Dashiell Carlyle, who unexpectedly discovers he has magical powers and isn’t the only one. He’s quickly drawn into a hidden organization that wants to use magic to build a better world, but Dashiell soon realizes this dream might come at a terrible price. A preview of the fully illustrated comic (available below) offers a glimpse of what those costs could be.

Black Star’s Tone is Dark and Moody Straight From the Jump


The magic system in Black Star seems to come at a great cost. While the story leading up to the current events isn’t fully explained yet, it has a compelling and dark atmosphere, hinting at the conflicts Kreuk has described as happening just out of sight.

According to actress Kristin Kreuk, the idea for Black Star came about while she, Peter, and Eric were filming Burden of Truth in Winnipeg. They were fascinated by the city’s stories and, enjoying working together, started spending their free time creating their own version of the history and magic they envisioned hidden beneath Winnipeg, influencing the city’s atmosphere and unseen conflicts.

Titan Comics editor Jack Devine describes this story, set in the haunting, snow-covered landscape of early 19th-century Winnipeg, as a unique take on magic. He says it’s a tale that blends hope and despair, miracles and danger, leaving readers to question whether the rewards justify the sacrifices. Devine also highlights Joe Bocardo’s captivating artwork, promising an immersive experience filled with both wonder and sadness.

Black Star goes on sale from Titan Comics on July 29th.
