Slow Horses star’s new psychological thriller confirms release date with chilling first look

Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, offers a sneak peek into the anticipated thriller series titled The Girlfriend, giving viewers an idea of what’s to come.

Centering around Olivia Cooke, Robin Wright, and Laurie Davidson, this six-part series is adapted from the hugely popular book of the same title by Michelle Francis.

(In other words, the series is based on a bestselling novel by Michelle Francis with Olivia Cooke, Robin Wright, and Laurie Davidson in leading roles.)

In the narrative, we meet Laura Wright, a woman who appears to lead a charmed life with a flourishing career, a devoted husband, and a beloved son named Daniel. However, her idyllic existence starts to crumble as Daniel introduces Cherry Cooke, a new girlfriend, into their lives, causing dramatic changes.

Following an awkward initial encounter, Laura begins to suspect Cherry is concealing some secrets. Could Cherry be a cunning social climber, or is Laura merely being overly suspicious? Ultimately, the truth lies in one’s point of view.

The ensemble is completed with Waleed Zuatier, Tanya Moodie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Karen Henthorn, Anna Chancellor, Leo Suter, and Francesca Corney joining the production.

The series is set to be released on Prime in full on 10 September.

Initial image previews present characters vividly, whereas a teaser trailer offers glimpses of the intricate, ominous storyline that unfolds.

Wright will also be taking on the role of director for this series, expressing her excitement in a statement about being given the opportunity to lead the project.

She expressed her excitement about taking on both the director and acting roles for a suspenseful, flavorful psychological thriller teeming with unexpected storylines and character transformations. She’s particularly looking forward to collaborating with Olivia and Laurie, as well as the rest of an incredibly talented cast and crew. Needless to say, she can hardly contain her enthusiasm!

Vernon Sanders, who heads television at Amazon MGM Studios, commented that “The Girlfriend” is a gripping family drama exploring the disintegration of a mother-son relationship, depicted through compelling themes such as love, ambition, and control.

The show is right in line with Rola Bauer’s universal English approach, and it’s a pleasure for us to collaborate with Imaginarium and Robin Wright on bringing Michelle Frances’ captivating tale to viewers worldwide through Amazon Prime Video.

The Girlfriend is released on Prime Video on 10 September.
