Slow Horses star Jack Lowden’s “bruisingly honest” and “intense” drama confirms UK cinema release

The National Theatre Live has announced that the British cinema screenings for “The Fifth Step“, a raw and truthful drama featuring performances by Jack Lowden and Martin Freeman, are set to take place.

The stage production, penned by David Ireland and helmed by Finn den Hertog, features Freeman as James, an individual who’s been attending Alcoholics Anonymous for quite some time and later takes on the role of a sponsor to Luka (played by Lowden). As Luka makes progress in his recovery, a revelation puts their friendship at risk.

After a run in Scotland last year, where Lowden was accompanied by his “Slow Horses” co-star Sean Gilder, the production moved to London’s West End in May. It has been confirmed that a film recording of the play will be released in cinemas starting from November 27th.

The Fifth Step nurtures a tenuous bond between Luka and James, rooted in mutual past encounters. However, a potentially risky disclosure could jeopardize the trust essential for their healing processes.

Described as a humorous yet candid tale exploring themes of addiction, masculinity, and faith, The Fifth Step has garnered praise from critics during its performance. The Financial Times, in particular, commended the production for being both sharply witty and brutally truthful.

The London Evening Standard commented that the production is a compelling, stimulating 85-minute performance for two outstanding actors, lauding Lowden and Freeman’s powerful portrayals and exceptional on-screen connection.

The review from What’sOnStage describes it as an intriguing exploration of men grappling with chaos in their lives. They noted that Lowden and Freeman engage in intense exchanges reminiscent of a boxing match, while TimeOut referred to the play as humorous, peculiar, skillfully acted, and thought-provoking.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t wait for a few months to pass so I can catch “The Fifth Step” in theaters. But before that, I’ll get my River Cartwright fix when “Slow Horses” comes back for its fifth season on Apple TV+, premiering on September 24th.

According to Mick Herron’s 2018 novel “London Rules”, the upcoming six-episode series will find Jackson Lamb (played by Gary Oldman) and his motley crew at Slough House drawn into some high-stakes political maneuvering, with the stakes rising even higher after a terrorist incident.

I’m thrilled to share that The Fifth Step is gracing the stage at London’s @sohoplace until the 26th of July, and I can hardly wait for its cinematic release on the 27th of November! As a fan, I’m also excitedly counting down the days until the 24th of September when Slow Horses season 5 will premiere on Apple TV+.

Here it comes! Get your hands on “British Comedy Legends,” our first print magazine from Digital Spy. You can pick it up at your local newsagent, or grab it online for only £3.99. Enjoy the laughter!
