Slow Horses Season 5: Roddy Ho’s Naivety and Blind Spots

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Slow Horses season 5, episode 5.

In season 5 of Slow Horses, Roddy Ho has become a more prominent character, and this increased focus has also revealed his shortcomings. Earlier seasons of the show largely centered around characters like Jackson Lamb (played by Gary Oldman) and River Cartwright, but this season has shifted the spotlight.

Early in the season, Roddy Ho became a central figure when he was suddenly attacked, and it was revealed his girlfriend was connected to those responsible. Following this, MI5 detained and thoroughly questioned him.

Roddy Ho Was Convinced That His Girlfriend Was Not A Plant

During questioning by his boss, Roddy Ho acted very strangely. He paced around, gave long, boastful speeches, and appeared quite unstable. Even after discovering his girlfriend had been unfaithful, he remained convinced she deeply loved him.

That all might seem very innocent, or it could be a smart way to throw off the people questioning him. However, his insistence that his girlfriend wouldn’t betray him—even when there was strong proof she would—points more towards him simply being naive.

Despite Overwhelming Evidence, Roddy Still Doesn’t See The Truth

Throughout episodes 3 and 4 of Slow Horses season 5, Roddy remains devoted to protecting his girlfriend, Tara, and firmly believes she hasn’t betrayed him. He even calls her near the end of episode 4 to warn her that MI5 is pursuing her, proving he still trusts her completely.

In episode 5, it’s revealed that Tara was responsible for hacking MI5 files. Even after this betrayal, Roddy still believes she has romantic feelings for him. However, Tara quickly clarifies that Roddy isn’t someone she’s interested in.

Roddy is incredibly skilled with computers and a talented hacker, but he clearly struggles with relationships. He quickly fell for someone involved in terrorism who ended up betraying him, and despite seeing this happen, he refuses to acknowledge the reality of the situation.

Roddy Ho shows a lot of promise, and he could really develop under Jackson Lamb’s guidance. He’s still quite inexperienced, but with more seasons of Slow Horses planned, he has the opportunity to mature and gain some perspective.
