As a gamer with a penchant for spy thrillers and a soft spot for the Slow Horses series, I must say that the premier episode of season 4 has set the stage for an exhilarating ride! The cliffhanger at the end left me on the edge of my seat, wondering who met their demise in David Cartwright’s bathtub.
Slow Horses season 4 episode 1 ending spoilers follow.
In the opening and closing moments of the first episode this season for Slow Horses, there’s an explosive start followed by a gunshot – initially, a bomb detonates at a London shopping mall, and eventually, a gunshot from David Cartwright’s shotgun can be heard.
Man, it’s been tough since season three. Grandpa River’s dementia seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Last week, I took him to his old club in London, but things got mixed up when they turned him away. Seems like he forgot he canceled the membership himself. It’s heart-wrenching to see such a vibrant soul struggling like this.
Drawing inspiration from Mick Heron’s novel “Spook Street,” the fourth installment of “Slow Horses” series delves into the consequences when an agent begins to falter in control, revealing the myriad secrets they have concealed.

In the premier of the Apple TV+ sensation, I found myself in the shoes of River, portrayed by Jack Lowden, confessing to Louisa, played by Rosalind Eleazar, that I’ve been delaying visits to my grandfather due to moments of confusion about his identity. She, in her supportive nature, urges me to make the trip to his countryside home tonight.
However, upon seeing an individual asserting to be River, it’s evident that David is perplexed and uncertain if the person ascending the stairs to draw him a bath truly is his grandson.
Who does David Cartwright kill?
Upon David’s entrance into the bathroom, he fires a shot at the individual claiming to be River, but the scene doesn’t provide us with a clear view of the person involved.
Later, upon his arrival, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) discovers the body without a face and confirms that it is indeed his team member, Slow Horse, who had previously escaped.
It becomes more likely that River met his end in the episode due to comments Oldman made prior to this season, hinting that a significant character might be killed, as he mentioned in an interview with the Radio Times.

However, there’s no need for concern! By the end of the episode, we discover that it wasn’t River who was seen; instead, he’s traveling through the French countryside by taxi, suggesting he’s trying to find out what’s going on.
As a gamer delving into the narrative of Heron’s fourth installment in the Slow Horses series, I must warn you about potential spoilers for Spook Street. The character who met his grim fate in the bathroom is intricately linked to an old mission from David’s Cold War days when he was leading MI5.
However, the show may have changed the plot of the book in certain ways. We’ll just have to tune in next week to see what happens next.
Slow Horses season 4 is streaming on Apple TV+.
