Skyler Gisondo Brings His Best Effort as Jimmy Olsen in New Superman Movie

Occasionally, it feels like fate itself arranges the pieces perfectly for an actor to step into a role they were destined to play. As a film enthusiast, I’ve long felt that Skyler Gisondo, with his distinctive red hair and undeniable talent, was the ideal choice for Jimmy Olsen – Clark Kent’s kind-hearted companion. It seems my thoughts have aligned with James Gunn’s vision as well, because he’s cast the 28-year-old in the upcoming DCU blockbuster, “Superman.

Without two brief previews heavily focused on Krypto, Jimmy Olsen, played by Gisondo, has not had a chance to shine before the movie’s summer debut. Fortunately, he was interviewed for the DC Studios Showcase podcast, where he discussed his personal Superman fandom and his role as the Daily Planet photographer.

Following an amusing explanation of how “West Side Story” and “Happy Gilmore” were his favorite VHS movies growing up, Gisondo delivered an answer fittingly in line with his personality when asked about his contributions to the character.

I’m unsure at the moment, but I’m crossing my fingers for a positive outcome. I haven’t had a chance to check it out just yet. I gave it my all, and I put in my absolute best effort; I truly hope that was enough.

Skyler Gisondo consistently delivers outstanding performances in various projects, yet remains humble about it. From his role as Jennifer Lawrence’s brother on The Bill Engvall Show to matching the talent of Timothy Olyphant, Drew Barrymore, and Liv Hewson on Santa Clarita Diet, there’s no sign of arrogance in him. Therefore, if he claims this performance is his best, it might just be the most exceptional Jimmy Olsen portrayal ever witnessed or heard.

(The live-action adaptation might not surpass the character’s run in Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber’s excellent 2019-2020 comic series Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen. However, this is irrelevant to our current discussion.)

Skyler Gisondo graciously acknowledged the persistent fan petitions requesting him for the role of Jimmy Olsen in the DC Universe. This wish unexpectedly transformed into a feasible prospect once James Gunn entered the scene and expressed his backing, as Skyler himself stated.

In one unique situation, it turned out that I was a strong fit for the role during the casting process. People online often commented, “Skyler should be Jimmy,” due to our similar freckles and resemblance. It’s quite extraordinary when things seem to align so perfectly, and James, the director, recognized this from the start. He exclaimed, “You’re Jimmy, man! You’re it!

It’s incredibly gratifying for an actor to receive such steadfast backing from a renowned director, especially when it pertains to what could potentially be the most significant film of 2025 – maybe even the biggest superhero movie until ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in 2026. But here’s something the Avengers don’t have: good old Jimmy Olsen.

It appears that Gisondo attributes his selection for the role of Superman’s Jimmy in Gunn & Co.’s production to mere coincidence, stating that he simply embodied the specific feel they were looking for.

It functioned quite naturally, almost as if I intuitively provided what they needed without much effort on my part.

It turns out that the actor, Skyler Gisondo, is undermining what makes him so appealing: he’s doing this role. Therefore, if Jimmy Olsen doesn’t push him too far from his familiar comfort zone, it means the character will instantly become one of the friendliest and most comforting in the entire DC Universe.

To fully appreciate Gisondo at his best, you’ll need a couple of subscriptions: one for The Righteous Gemstones on Max, and another for Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix. Neither subscription promises an endless experience, but they surely won’t disappoint in delivering top-notch performances by Gisondo.
