Skeptic Librarian’s Journey: A Magical Evolution Awaits in the Next Chapter!
In the continuation series of “The Librarians,” a fresh batch of guardians has been discovered to safeguard the world against magical threats. However, Olivia Morris’ character Lysa stands out as an unconventional pick compared to previous selections. Morris has garnered attention and ascended in popularity over the last few years, with notable roles in the blockbuster Indian action film “RRR,” the period drama “Hotel Portofino” on BritBox, and the psychological thriller “The Head” that spans multiple nations. Accompanying Morris in this spin-off are Callum McGowan, Bluey Robinson, Jessica Green, and Caroline Loncq. Notably, Christian Kane will make a special appearance reprising his character of Jacob Stone.
In the series The Librarians: The Next Chapter , Morris plays Lysa Pascal, a distinguished scientist who is taken aback when she discovers that she’s inherited a castle in Belgrade, Serbia from an unknown relative. Accompanied by the castle caretaker, she uncovers Robinson’s Connor, a historian ousted from academia because of his faith in magic, as well as a peculiar painting resembling herself. Upon encountering McGowan’s time-traveled Librarian, Vikram Chamberlain, and learning about the enigmatic world of magic, Lysa decides to stay and investigate its scientific foundations.
Prior to the debut of “The Librarians: The Next Chapter,” Olivia Morris sat down for an interview with ScreenRant. During their chat, she shared her excitement about becoming part of the thrilling universe of this fantasy series. She also talked about the intriguing aspect of portraying a skeptic in the show and how her character’s storyline will unfold throughout the initial 12 episodes. Morris also discussed collaborating with the original cast members who are reprising their roles for the sequel, and provided a sneak peek into the developments we can expect in season 2.
Morris Found It A Delight To “Play Against” Characters Who Believed In Magic
“She Doesn’t Live In That World, And We Suddenly Meet Her With It All Crumbling Down Around Her.”
Initially, the characters of Rebecca Romijn’s Eve and John Harlan Kim’s Ezekiel in the original Librarians series were hesitant, but they soon became enamored with the magical realm during their escapades. In this regard, Morris’ character serves as a novelty, exhibiting a level of skepticism that resembles Dana Scully from The X-Files more than the others, as she endeavors to debunk whatever supernatural phenomena they encounter on their travels.
From the instant Morris read about Lysa, she felt “this was going to be an enjoyable role to portray“, and admitted openly that she “adores” her character. Morris also found it incredibly clever how Lysa’s character development began on a more challenging note, providing her with a “wonderful chance to create a significant arc for the character“. As Morris explained, Lysa is a scientist who has always been convinced she understood the world and its workings. “For her, things are either black or white, not shades of gray. She doesn’t inhabit that kind of world, and suddenly we meet her in a state where everything is collapsing around her.
One of the most valuable resources she discovered for convincingly portraying Lysa’s skepticism was her interaction with the rest of the show’s ensemble. As she rarely encounters individuals like them, and their commitment to magic made it simpler to challenge them. Cal, Morris joked, is a larger-than-life character with an air of the fantastic, and it was delightful to act in contrast with these characters. Then there’s Jess, who arrives on a motorbike and lets down her hair – Lysa has never met a woman like that either, so she’s simply taken aback by it all, thinking, “This is insane.
Similar to the first series, The Next Chapter showcases numerous scenes involving all four main characters together. However, it also plans to divide them into smaller groups, as Morris puts it, “each so distinct.” The actress gleamed when hinting that “Vikram and Lysa share a lively dynamic” while suggesting the rest of the group offers “a striking contrast” that helps reveal deeper aspects of their characters. You’ll have ample chances to get to know each character in various pairings and relationships, Morris said with a grin.
In my opinion, one intriguing aspect unveiled in the early installments of “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” is the tantalizing hint of a shared past between Lysa and Vikram, as well as Lysa’s ancestors’ connection to the ruthless dictator, General Gregor. Although Morris remains tight-lipped about the specifics of this developing narrative, she tantalizes us by suggesting that “fans can expect a fresh tale unfolding“, promising that these revelations will catalyze “new storylines and altered dynamics among the team members“.
Vikram seems more suited to a life as a Librarian in the 1800s rather than the modern era. It feels like he belongs with his family and community from those times. This raises questions about how this change might impact his original family. I’ll let that thought hang in the air.
Morris Is “So Grateful” To Be Part Of “Such A Massive World And A Massive Legacy”
Working With Returning Stars Washed Away “Any Of Our Nerves Or Uncertainty”
Similar to Leverage: Redemption that preceded it, The Librarians: The Next Chapter carries forward the expanding universe of the action-packed franchise, a journey that started with the trilogy of films featuring Noah Wyle and continued with the 2014 TV series. Upon joining this franchise, Morris expressed initial apprehension due to its immense size and rich history, yet she came to view it as “one of the most fulfilling projects” because there was a wealth of information to explore, thanks in large part to showrunner Dean Devlin.
As a film critic, I’ve been privileged to review countless scripts and embark on numerous projects, yet rarely do I feel like we’re truly starting from scratch. With “Dean,” however, it feels more like jumping into the thick of things, and I’m immensely grateful for the wealth of knowledge I have at my disposal about this extraordinary show. The showrunner, Dean, is not just a brilliant mind, but an encyclopedia in his own right. His guidance as director, coupled with his writing prowess and constant presence during the initial episodes, has made my experience on set truly remarkable.
In a subsequent commendation, Morris lauded Devlin for cultivating an open, interactive environment on set among his cast and team. He encouraged them to “bounce ideas off him, probe and ponder,” and rather than dismissing their thoughts with rigid instructions like “‘This is the way it must be, because that’s how it’s always been’“, he would instead approach their suggestions with genuine curiosity. “He was more like, ‘Sure. Let’s figure this out. Let’s explore how the show evolves and how these characters react’” Morris reminisced. “Surprisingly, what I initially expected to be daunting has turned out to be my favorite part of the experience.
Alongside Devlin, “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” also gains strength from the comeback of several stars from the initial series, such as Stone. However, others are yet to be formally announced, although hinted at by Devlin. Morris shares her and the new cast’s excitement about having Kane on set with them, primarily because his presence helped to alleviate any lingering nerves or doubts, encouraging them to “step up” and carry on the legacy, especially since “The Library” is still ongoing.
Morris fondly reminisced, “Their library wasn’t handed over for us to start, but he said something like, ‘Go ahead and use it.’ We were taken aback, saying, ‘Oh.’ It’s one thing for Dean to say that to us, but hearing Christian suggest it, we can’t express enough gratitude now, looking back. I believe it truly gave us the freedom to take things and run, as we didn’t want to stray too far from the show.
The Next Chapter’s Early Season 2 Renewal Left The Cast “Gobsmacked”
Morris Also Teases How It Will Be Different From Season 1
After transitioning from The CW to TNT, it emerged that the series The Librarians: The Next Chapter had already secured an early renewal for its second season, with filming now more than halfway completed. Upon learning of this news, Morris expressed that she and her fellow actors were taken aback, as they had received a collective call from Devlin on FaceTime – they thought they would be asked to do reshoots or something similar. However, they were all taken by surprise since it was only two weeks following the conclusion of season 1 filming.
Morris chuckled as he explained, “‘Hey Dean, we’ve wrapped up! But what do you mean? We’ve finished episode 1!’. We were absolutely thrilled, but it’s been such a delight to secretly film our series in Serbia, with no one around and no one aware of it except us.
Moving forward to season 2, Morris remains cautious about revealing too many details, given her eagerness for The Librarians: The Next Chapter ‘s first season to be in the hands of others after being involved. However, she did express her sentiment that “season 2 is fantastic”, and that it will delve deeper into the characters as a quartet, as well as individually, offering insights into what it truly means to be part of The Library.
