Skeleton Crew: Who does Alia Shawkat voice in the Star Wars series?
As a Star Wars enthusiast with a soft spot for intriguing characters and talented actresses, I must say that Alia Shawkat’s addition to Skeleton Crew as Kh’ymm has been a delightful surprise. Her voice acting brings an enigmatic charm to this owl-like character, making her both mysterious and captivating.
Initially in the first several episodes of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” viewers are introduced to a band of kids unaware they’ve been hidden from the rest of the galaxy. However, it isn’t until an enlightening revelation is made via expositional dialogue by a sagely woman resembling an owl named Kh’ymm, that we all discover the truth together. But who is the actor providing the voice for this character?
Alia Shawkat joins Skeleton Crew as the voice of Kh’ymm
Kh’ymm is given voice by Alia Shawkat, who is known for her roles in shows like “Arrested Development.” She has also appeared in productions such as “Drunk History,” “The Final Girls,” and “Scavengers Reign.
The main characters are now at a critical stage of their voyage, requiring a direction to eventually return to At Attin. Their captain, Jod Na Nawood, guides them towards his dubious associate, Kh’ymm, whom he describes as not entirely trustworthy due to the possibility of betrayal. However, it might be that Jod is projecting his own tendencies and Kh’ymm is merely being cautious by preparing a defense against an impending move by him, as she requests X-Wing backup. Additionally, the fact that Kh’ymm calls Jod “Crimson Jack” alongside Captain Silvo raises concerns about the reliability of this character.
As I stand before Kh’ymm’s dwelling, the Skeleton Crew, complete with the familiar faces from Jabba’s palace, saunters in with a mix of camaraderie and underlying tension, much like the banter between Han Solo and Lando Calrissian in “The Empire Strikes Back.” Inside her abode, the owl-woman boasts an impressive hoard of trinkets and tokens from countless galaxies. Her brows furrow slightly as she witnesses the children aligning with Crimson Jack, but there’s a glimmer of curiosity in her eyes as she considers helping us find our lost home, At Attin.
Kh’ymm discloses that despite her possession of charts detailing every star and their corresponding hyperspace pathways, there are nine mysterious planets concealed for safekeeping. She is the lone survivor from these planets, known as the realm of marvels. She maintains that her home planet, long considered a myth from children’s tales and sailors’ shanties, was merely a belief for fools; she, however, always held faith in its existence.
As Kh’ymm ponders about enigmatic ideas like ‘The Great Work’ and ‘The Barrier,’ she hypothesizes they could be nebula gas obscuring the planet from detection. Then, she delves into deciphering a symbol on Fern’s jacket. When Jod inquires if they’ve made progress, Kh’ymm hesitates, causing suspicion. As the crew disperses, Kh’ymm accuses Jack of being untrustworthy and summons the New Republic for assistance.
One interesting detail about Kh’ymm’s character is that she briefly connected with KB, and perhaps, seeing as how they are both equipped with mods, they will be able to communicate with one another in some way when needed. Kh’ymm asks KB, “What are you going to do, go with Jack?” followed by supposing that he told them to “go with your gut.” It is because of this interaction that KB stood her ground back at the ship and demanded Jod tell them the truth, or he would not come with them.
Alia Shawkat breathes life into the largely computer-generated character of Kh’ymm and allows her to unfurl her potential. It’s likely that we haven’t seen the last of this character, as she seems to have much more to contribute to the Skeleton Crew. In a typical narrative, Kh’ymm might have been the one to lead the children to their final destination, but for this pirate-themed voyage, the kids are stuck with Jod Na Nawood for now.
