Skeleton Crew: What we can look forward to with Mick Giacchino's music

As a seasoned gamer and music enthusiast with a background in composition, I can confidently say that Mick Giacchino’s score for “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is something to be excited about! With his father being the composer of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” it’s clear that music runs deep in this family.

In every Star Wars production, fans eagerly wait to learn how the film or series will be musically scored. The music not only heightens the viewing experience and lingers with fans long after release dates, but it also provides clues about characters’ traits. Who could forget the ominous tune of the Imperial March or the string melodies that introduced the Ewoks in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi? I recall eagerly anticipating hearing a bit of “Across the Stars” when Rey spoke of family in Episode VII: The Force Awakens, and realizing two movies later that the Emperor’s theme was hidden within her recurring melody. With the announcement of the composer for Skeleton Crew, there’s a lot to look forward to.

Mick Giacchino is the composer for Skeleton Crew

Michael Giacchino, who is renowned for scoring movies like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, has a son named Mick Giacchino. His music lent dignity to Jyn Erso’s narrative and added palpable tension during the Battle of Scarif. It’s fascinating to observe their shared profession, and even more intriguing to notice the distinct styles they each bring to their compositions. According to Starwars.com, Michael was encouraging about Mick’s work on “Skeleton Crew”.

From the beginning, he said essentially, ‘Just remember to have fun with it,’ especially given the nature of the show. He was very supportive.

Mick has shared his wish for a production where audiences can deeply empathize with the characters since they’re walking in their shoes, as he put it. One of his previous works includes composing the soundtrack for “Zootopia: Hot Pursuit,” an attraction within Shanghai’s Disneyland park that merges exhilarating action and the ordinary happenings of a police precinct. Mick’s music seamlessly fits this concept, particularly when the chase starts, and his tunes effectively quicken our pulse and keep us attentive to the unfolding scene.

Apart from recognizing him on HBO’s show “The Penguin,” you might be acquainted with his work as well. The soundtrack for this crime series set in Gotham, titled “The Penguin,” carries a somber and raw emotional tone at times, using low strings and close harmonies to create the foundation of each scene. One standout piece from this project is “Scherzo for a Flightless Bird.” This composition begins with subtle harmonies and a violin solo that gradually picks up speed, providing a backdrop for an intense, slightly distorted piece. Percussion and a piano later join in, contributing to the overall effect. Remarkably, it communicates profoundly without straying too far from its original musical theme. This gives the impression that the music originates directly from the character’s most intimate perspectives of life.

To understand where the upcoming series might fit within the musical landscape, it’s beneficial to consider Mick’s remarks about the theme. He explains that he discovered a chord progression that was straightforward and adaptable as a musical motif. Jon Watts quickly linked the opening four chords with the same number of chords. In my musical education, I learned to preserve a link between each chord and its progression. By carrying certain notes from one chord to another, we can connect a musical phrase by the commonalities among its parts. This technique appears to be an effective way to differentiate each character while also creating a sense of unity among them.

Mick Giacchino’s compositions possess an extraordinary ability to create magic even at basic levels. Personally, I’d love to see some of the intensity he brought to ‘The Penguin’ manifested in more dramatic scenes throughout the series.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew arrives on Disney+ on December 3, 2024.
