Skeleton Crew reveals its directors and two new images
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of immersion in the expansive universe of Star Wars, I can confidently say that the upcoming series, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, has me absolutely buzzing with anticipation! The diverse and talented lineup of directors, from Marvel’s Jon Watts to the Academy Award-winning Daniels, promises a fresh take on this timeless saga.
Ever since Irvin Kirshner helmed “The Empire Strikes Back” in 1980, a multitude of creators have taken over as directors for the Star Wars franchise. From Kirshner to Gareth Edwards and the late Carl Weathers, the list has been extensive, each director bringing their distinctive style and vision to the table. The latest series, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”, boasts a roster of gifted directors eager to continue the legacy.
The showrunners, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, have brought together a diverse group of directors for this project. Notably, Jon Watts is from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having directed the recently premiered Spider-Man trilogy. Among the other directors joining the team are Bryce Dallas Howard, Lee Issac Chung, David Lowery, Jack Schreier, Daniel Kwan, and Daniel Scheinert. Each of these directors will be taking charge of an individual episode.
The Daniels are wrapping up work on their film “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which won the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards two years ago. Previously, both Howard and Chung have directed episodes for “Star Wars”; they’ve also contributed to “The Mandalorian.” Additionally, Howard has directed an episode of the “The Book of Boba Fett” series.
In an interview with Empire Online, Brianne Howard, daughter of director Ron Howard, shared her excitement about collaborating with Watts and Ford. She’s known these actors, particularly Ford, for more than two decades. Interestingly, Watts possesses a playbill from a production that Brianne directed during her college days.
In the upcoming installment, Howard will be directing for the fifth time within the series, while previously lending her voice to the character Yaddle in the animated “Tales of the Jedi” series.
The team of directors, much like the show itself, is made up of a variety of individuals, which adds richness to the series. Each episode of “The Mandalorian” exhibits a distinct flair, clearly demonstrating the creative vision behind the scenes.
Director David Lowery, known for his work with Disney projects, helmed the 2016 remake of “Pete’s Dragon” and the 2023 Disney Plus film titled “Peter Pan and Wendy.” On the other hand, Jack Schreier, primarily a TV director, is set to direct the upcoming Marvel movie “Thunderbolts,” scheduled for release in 2025.
In that same Empire interview, Watts expressed his desire for directors who could present Star Wars from a fresh angle and contribute their distinctive narrative style.
Additionally, Empire unveiled two fresh visuals for the approaching series, one of which offers a sneak peek at the redesigned SM-33 droid, voiced by Nick Frost.
