Skeleton Crew: At Attin is just right for Star Wars
As a gamer who grew up with the original Star Wars trilogy as my bedtime stories and weekend adventures, I must say that “Skeleton Crew” has managed to weave its magic spell yet again. The suburban setting initially gave me a sense of déjà vu, reminding me of Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” but as the story unfolded, it proved to be a delightful surprise.
Upon watching the trailer for Skeleton Crew, my initial reaction to the vast suburban setting was that it didn’t match the Star Wars universe I am familiar with. In truth, the visuals reminded me strongly of Madeleine L’Engle’s novel A Wrinkle in Time. This series portrays a city lacking uniqueness and creativity, which shares similarities with Wim’s neighborhood. Despite the show appearing enjoyable, I questioned whether Star Wars’ distinctive character could endure within such an environment.
It became clear that the intention behind designing this contemporary, clean-cut town was to offer a stark contrast to the dirty, pirate-ridden realms the children would venture into later on. To some extent, this is accurate. Nevertheless, upon watching the first episode, I was surprised by how effectively the Star Wars style managed to endure even within less chaotic settings.
It’s not the first instance that Star Wars has delved into the concept of cleaner environments. For example, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s childhood home, the palace of Naboo in The Phantom Menace, and Mon Mothma’s apartment in Andor all depict such settings. However, these locales are embellished to create a sense of otherworldliness, whereas At Attin, as seen in Star Wars, is nestled within a typical suburban setting on Earth.
In the opening episode of “Skeleton Crew” titled “This Could Be A Real Adventure,” I discovered that Star Wars-like suburbs were not the creatively impoverished landscapes I had previously compared them to. Instead, being close to such a familiar setting served as a relatable bridge for me to immerse myself in the world and share the feelings of the children. The early scenes will resonate with viewers who lived in comparable neighborhoods or spent their youth watching movies like “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” If such escapades can occur in a place like that, it seems possible that they could take place anywhere, including here on our planet Earth.
The Star Wars charm still leaks into every aspect of the show. There are many great crossovers from the familiar alien residents like the Ithorian walking her dog to the hologram Neel’s family was watching, which was a hilarious reference to The Star Wars Holiday Special. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the speeder bikes had tassels on them, just as normal bikes can have.
These delightful touches enable our contemporary world to harmonize with the sci-fi charm of Star Wars. At first glance, what seemed like a bleak universe lacking character, was instead brimming with Easter eggs and careful details that brought warmth to Wim’s home. Skeleton Crew underscores for fans that the aesthetic of Star Wars is multifaceted enough to make even ordinary suburban neighborhoods appear right at home in the distant galaxy.
The first two episodes of Skeleton Crew are now streaming on Disney+.
