Sisu: Road to Revenge Is a Global Streaming Sensation on HBO Max

Despite a disappointing performance in theaters, the film found success on streaming platforms. This action-packed thriller, centered around revenge and war, continues the story from the 2022 movie.

The action film Sisu: Road to Revenge will be available to stream on HBO Max worldwide starting March 1st. While it initially released in theaters in November 2025 to positive reviews, it didn’t do well in cinemas. Now, it’s finding success with streaming audiences.

The Finnish action film Sisu: Road to Revenge launched on HBO Max in several Central and South American countries on February 28th. It quickly became the most-watched title in six countries on its first day, and expanded to lead the charts in a total of eleven countries – including Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, and Uruguay – by its second day.

This news follows closely after a recent event. The thriller film had a short run on the charts, peaking at number six in the U.S. on February 26th.

Sisu Is an Underrated Sleeper Hit

Despite receiving excellent reviews, the film Sisu hasn’t yet reached a wide audience. This Finnish thriller, about wartime revenge, was released in 2022 and was both written and directed by Jalmari Helander.

The film series features Jorma Tommila as Aatami Korpi, a Finnish war hero who later becomes a gold prospector. The first movie takes place during the Lapland War, a conflict between Finland and Nazi Germany that occurred towards the end of World War II.

Although the war wasn’t the central focus, Aatami found himself in a life-or-death situation, forced to fight off a robbery and attempted murder by a ruthless and dishonest Waffen-SS platoon led by a notorious officer.

In Sisu: Road to Revenge, Aatami Korpi takes apart his family’s destroyed home after they were killed in the war. He loads the pieces onto a truck, intending to rebuild it somewhere safe as a memorial to them. However, the man responsible for his family’s deaths returns, determined to kill Korpi and complete his gruesome task.

This sets up a relentlessly violent and action-packed fight for survival, pitting the seemingly indestructible man against a deadly opponent. The sequel expanded the cast with Richard Brake and Stephen Lang, the latter portraying the Soviet officer responsible for the tragic loss of Korpi’s family.

The 2022 film received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a 94% approval rating from critics and an 88% rating from viewers. The new film, Sisu: Road to Revenge, is equally well-received, with a 94% approval rating from critics and 87% from audiences.

While popular, these films weren’t massive box office successes. Sisu cost around €6 million ($7 million) to make and earned $14.3 million in total. The follow-up film had a budget of $12.2 million but only brought in $9.8 million worldwide.

The Sisu Filmmaker Has an Ambitious Project Next

Following his work on the intense action films, Sylvester Stallone is passing the torch with a new John Rambo prequel. Production began in late January, and Noah Centineo will take on the lead role. The cast also includes Yao (known for Sinners), Jason Tobin (A Thousand Blows), Quincy Isaiah (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), Jefferson White (Yellowstone), and Tayme Thapthimthong (The White Lotus).

The filmmaker expressed their excitement in a recent statement, saying it feels unreal to finally be able to create their own Rambo-style film.

As a film buff, I was excited to check out Sisu: Road to Revenge, but unfortunately, it’s not currently available on any of the usual streaming services here in the U.S. Luckily, you can still rent or buy it digitally. Good news though – Sisu is actually streaming on Prime Video, so that’s one way to watch!
