Sister Wives’ Kody Brown: The Modern-Day Hugh Hefner?

On the latest episode of TLC’s Sister Wives, Christine Brown discussed how much power Kody Brown had over his wives, including influencing their wardrobe choices and makeup styles.

It transpired that Kody had similarities with a contemporary Hugh Hefner; he preferred his Playboy bunny partners to be blondes, slim, and dressed in a stylishly attractive manner.

56-year-old Kody had a strong impact on his wives, as stated by Christine, who often felt insecure around him. Given his behavior, it’s not surprising that she felt this way.

Kody is deeply rooted in a strict form of Mormon belief, and he shares parenting responsibilities with his three ex-spouses: Christine (age 53), Janelle (age 55), and Meri (age 54). These women were all previously married to him at the same time.

Christine’s husband, David Woolley, labeled Kody as being superficial in the way he handled Christine during the process of helping his spouse move to North Carolina, where Janelle (a former Sister Wife) was relocating to be closer to her daughter, Madison ‘Maddie’ Brush.

Christine elaborated on the specific tastes in aesthetics that Kody underlined when discussing his ex-spouses’ preferences.

‘He liked makeup – it was like, you had to always, always look nice,’ she said. 

Christine said that even outdoor outings had Kody calling for glamorous looks and ensembles.

She mentioned that we would go camping, with me and Janelle laboriously preparing breakfast and cleaning up afterwards, while Robyn took seemingly endless time to apply her makeup.

‘And doing our kid’s hair and doing her hair and making sure everybody looked good.’

Christine noted that Kody would compliment their appearance after they had been working hard on the food and cleaning up camp, even though we were all sweaty and exhausted.

She noted that it was ‘probably the reason why [she] hated camping so bad.’

Christine said ‘so many times in my marriage,’ there were uncomfortable incidents as such.

In the episode, Janelle mentioned that Christine appeared quite distressed because Robyn was away applying makeup.

In response to the event, Janelle expressed, “While it’s annoying, I’m determined to enjoy myself here.

During a private reflection, Robyn mentioned about the camping trip: “That camping trip, when I was six months pregnant, I felt unwell quite frequently.

Last night, I ended up vomiting violently outside my tent, kneeling on the ground. While Janelle and Christine were preparing breakfast, I was rushing to gather myself quickly, eager to start the day.

Last year, Kody openly stated that he wouldn’t feel inclined to add another sister wife to the family, following his separations from Meri, Janelle, and Christine over a period of 14 months.

In November of 2021, Christine, previously married to Woolley, declared that she and Kody were parting ways.

In a post on Instagram, she shared that after being together for over 25 years, Kody and she had drifted apart, leading her to make the tough choice to move on.

We’ll remain an integral part of one another’s journey as we raise our lovely kids and bolster our cherished family. For now, we humbly request your understanding and compassion as we move forward together in this new chapter of our family life.

During the Sister Wives: One on One special aired late last year, I, a die-hard fan, discovered that Janelle had parted ways with Kody, a revelation made by him himself.

He stated, ‘I’m no longer with Janelle, and I’ve been divorced from Christine. It’s evident to me that Janelle is happily living her life apart from me.’

Janelle admitted that they had been apart for a number of months, since she had grown rather detached from the marriage.

She mentioned that it didn’t affect her as deeply as it did Christine; instead, it felt more like a sorrowful acknowledgment that the chapter of life in question had come to an end. They had enjoyed a wonderful journey together.

In 2022, Meri also revealed she was parting ways with Kody after more than three decades together.
