Sir Rod Stewart celebrates his Glastonbury announcement at The Ritz with wife Penny Lancaster as he reveals the staggering financial cost of the headline spot amid backlash
As someone who has been around for quite some time and witnessed the evolution of music, I must say that seeing Rod Stewart headline Glastonbury again is like reliving the golden era of rock ‘n’ roll. I remember grooving to his tunes back in the day, and it brings a warm nostalgic feeling knowing he’s still going strong.
Sir Rod Stewart beamed broadly as he exited The Ritz in London, arm-in-arm with his wife Penny Lancaster, following their celebration of his upcoming headlining performance at Glastonbury, which they announced on Tuesday.
79-year-old music legend has been confirmed as the opening act for Glastonbury 2025, with the festival organizers revealing on Tuesday that he will perform in the Legends slot on the Pyramid Stage. However, some fans have expressed disappointment believing he is the main headliner instead.
23 years after his previous performance at the Somerset festival, Rod is set to perform in the legendary Sunday tea-time “legends” slot, much like Shania Twain did in 2024.
Instead of partying the night away after leaving the 5-star hotel in Mayfair, draped in a red feather boa, it’s worth noting that he did so, knowing fully well that his Glastonbury performance would cost him a small fortune, running into hundreds of thousands of pounds.
He donned an impressive outfit, sporting a sleek black suit, a stylish white open-collar shirt, and a classy black-and-white, unknotted polka dot tie.
He sported a vibrant red plaid sock pair, and added a touch of wild style with leopard-patterned shoes to finish off his evening ensemble.
Meanwhile Penny wowed in a sparkly black long sleeved dress which showed off her amazing figure.
She showcased her long legs in a knee-length dress and accentuated her figure with black high heels.
Penny beamed with joy as a doorman shielded her from the rain with an umbrella while guiding her towards the waiting Rolls Royce of the couple.
This morning, Rod had a conversation with talkSPORT Breakfast. During this chat, he shared that he promptly accepted the offer for the Glastonbury performance, stating it as a significant honor for him.
Nevertheless, the performer asserted that participating in the famous legends set at Worthy Farm is expected to set him back an impressive $300,000 (approximately £237,780).
Rod said: ‘It’s going to cost me a fortune to do it – $300,0000.’
The musician clarified that he personally will cover the expenses of transporting his live group from the United States, stating that it’s absolutely valuable and he wouldn’t hesitate to spend up to a million dollars (approximately £792,500) to make it happen.
He shared: “I need to return my entire band from the U.S., and unfortunately, Glastonbury doesn’t cover that expense. However, even if it costs me a million dollars, I wouldn’t hesitate to do it. This is an immense honor; truly, it’s the highest honor I could receive.
As a devoted admirer, I’ll have the honor to witness this music icon at 80, gracing the stages of Worthy Farm, emulating the paths trodden by Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Barry Gibb, and Kylie Minogue, who all held the legendary slot before.
On the contrary, those with tickets for Glastonbury 2025 have criticized the festival for booking Rod Stewart, arguing that it marks the end of Glastonbury as they know it.
Fans of the platform previously referred to as Twitter expressed their anger towards Rod, suggesting he should retire and lamenting that younger generations may be unfamiliar with his music.

But others were delighted at the prospect of seeing Rod perform at Glastonbury again.
On a Sunday afternoon, basking in the sunshine with a pair of cold beers while enjoying the tunes that your father used to play in the car – who wouldn’t love it! said the concert-goer excitedly.

Rod expressed to the BBC his feelings of pride and readiness to perform at the sold-out festival, further mentioning that at 79 years old, he is more than capable of entertaining and exciting the audience.
He previously headlined the festival in 2002, alongside Coldplay and Stereophonics.
‘What a way to bow out with the final legends slot before we take a fallow year. We cannot wait.’
At the age of 80 in January, the artist will be among the eldest performers to take on a significant performance at Glastonbury.
For five days every June, Worth Farm in Somerset hosts a grand music festival that attracts approximately 200,000 music enthusiasts annually, who come to witness performances by some of the globe’s most prominent musicians.
The official Glastonbury tickets went on sale on November 14 and November 17.
As a devoted enthusiast, I found myself braced for an unusual predicament. The significance of the situation was undeniable: the year 2026 had been designated a fallow one, implying that our cherished festival would be temporarily put on hold.
