Sir Rod Stewart, 79, reveals the ’embarrassing’ hobby that has ‘taken over his life’
As a seasoned observer of human behavior, I find myself deeply moved by the events unfolding around Rod Stewart and his wife Penny. Having spent many years in the limelight myself, I can empathize with the unique challenges that come with being in the public eye.
Sir Rod Stewart recently disclosed an unexpected pastime that has become a significant part of his life, which he had previously been shy about revealing due to feeling embarrassed.
The A-lister, 79, has found a love of model railway sets and describes going into his workshop as ‘like entering the gates of heaven’.
For years, I had harbored a secret passion – railway modeling and rock’n’roll, an unusual pairing I feared wouldn’t sit well with others. So, I kept it hidden, as Rod put it, afraid to unveil this side of me due to such apprehensions.
For the very first time, Rod unveiled his extraordinary miniature train setup, affectionately known as “Grand Street & Three Rivers Railroad”.
He told Railway Modeller magazine that he finds working on his set ‘relaxing’ and often spends ‘four to five hours’ in his workshop.
Rod expressed that stepping into his workshop feels like passing through the pearly gates of heaven for him. He cherishes those moments deeply, and on a typical day, he devotes about four to five hours, even squeezing in short visits when possible, for a total of around twenty minutes extra if his schedule permits.
In about twenty minutes, I can accomplish quite a bit. It has become quite dominant in my life, though, to some extent. In an enjoyable manner, I might add. There used to be times when I deliberately avoided it.
Initially, I felt that model railways and rock’n’roll were incongruous, causing a sense of embarrassment. However, I’ve since overcome that feeling and am now proud to be involved in both. To clarify, music is my primary focus in life, but this hobby (railway modelling) ranks a close second.
In addition, he swaps parts of his model train collection with his close friend and train enthusiast, Jools Holland, as he shared.
After Penny Lancaster, Rod’s wife, spoke up about Gregg Wallace on MasterChef, following Rod’s criticism of the host who faced allegations of misconduct and eventually left BBC.
On Thursday, the model, aged 53, publicly discussed the allegations for the first time on Loose Women. She stated that she was both a victim and an observer of Gregg’s behavior, which can be interpreted as experiencing his bullying directly and also witnessing it happening to others.
She declared, “I indeed observed and experienced some instances of Gregg Wallace’s bullying and harassment behavior. Regrettably, many members of the production team also witnessed this.
She continued, expressing her conviction that he misused his authority to create an atmosphere of fear and discomfort for many on the film set.
It’s truly regrettable when individuals like him escape consequences for such actions, while others look on. It’s clear too, that many people are speaking up about this situation.
60-year-old Gregg left MasterChef following allegations by 13 individuals, among them Kirsty Wark from Newsnight, claiming he exhibited unwanted and sexually suggestive behavior while on set.
After leaving the show, singer Rod launched an angry tirade against the presenter, labeling him as a “chubby, bald, rude brute” due to his alleged mistreatment of his wife Penny during her appearance on Celebrity MasterChef in 2021.
Penny explained that her husband, Rod, reacted angrily because, upon hearing discussions about troubling actions, he felt compelled to speak up immediately.
The concerned spouse contemplated, “It’s not right for me to remain quiet; I must speak up,” recognizing that I was deeply distressed in that moment.
She mentioned later on that she wasn’t aware of her husband’s Instagram outburst beforehand, explaining: “At the time, I was serving on a jury, which means we must fully disconnect our phones. Consequently, I was cut off from the grid for a while.
Upon powering up my phone again, I received a message from a friend exclaiming, “Wow, what an incredible message your spouse posted!” To which I responded, “Which message are you talking about? What did he do?
Yet, Penny admitted to feeling a sense of validation as well upon witnessing others share similar claims, expressing: “Initially, I was taken aback, but soon began considering all potential consequences.
A few days later, I felt a small sense of validation as something was shared. Reflecting on the MeToo movement, it’s startling to realize how many women endure mistreatment by men in influential roles and are too fearful to speak up due to not believing they will be believed or supported at the time.
Occasionally, it may be years before someone else brings up an issue, and this late revelation can empower other victims and those who have endured similar hardships to find their voice and share their experiences.
During her time on the show, Penny found herself shedding tears when Gregg scolded her for the significant delay in serving the food and subsequently declined to partake in her meal.
The instance where Gregg declined Penny’s tartar sauce, criticizing her for using whole eggs rather than just egg yolks, resurfaced when her spouse Rod called him a “plump aggressor.
Additionally, Gregg reprimanded Penny, the voluntary special police constable, for her tardiness in delivering meals to the critics during the quarterfinals, causing her to weep.
Gregg left MasterChef following allegations of inappropriate behavior involving sexualization while filming the popular BBC series.
After the announcement, Sir Rod penned: ‘It seems Wallace is gone… You publicly embarrassed my wife during the program, yet they edited that part out, didn’t they? You’re a plump, balding, boorish brute with poor manners. I guess karma has caught up with you.’
13 individuals, among them Kirsty Wark, have voiced concerns about his behavior during their professional interactions spanning a 17-year timeframe (from 2005 to 2022) across five different shows on the BBC.
Kirsty claims that during the filming of Celebrity MasterChef in 2011, Gregg made inappropriate sexual stories and jokes not once but twice, which were highly unsuitable in the presence of both contestants and crew members. She further stated that his humor was completely out of place.
On two specific instances, he employed explicit sexual language in the presence of several individuals, yet no one seemed to respond or interact with it. Instead, it felt like a monologue. However, I believe everyone was uneasy, which was an unexpected turn of events for me.
The BBC and MasterChef’s production company, Banijay, declined to comment.
In an old video from Penny’s appearance on the show, the ex-model faced embarrassment as her fried calamari and self-made tartar sauce didn’t turn out right. The judges declined to sample her dish that was described as a ‘raw egg and milkshake-like consistency’.
Initially tackling the task of creating her own tartar sauce, the previous Loose Women star appeared optimistic and self-assured, almost boasting a bit. She jokingly commented to the camera: “I’m doing better than I expected, which is great! I don’t want to mess up now.
However, she had spoken prematurely because her sauce turned out badly shortly after John announced it was inedible.
When serving, Penny commented, “That tartar sauce doesn’t seem like my usual tartar sauce,” to which Gregg replied, “It appears you’ve used whole eggs instead of egg yolks.
John Torode mentioned, ‘Inside here is an uncooked egg mixed with milk and oil, but I’m unable to consume it.’
Despite initially facing difficulties, Penny managed to salvage the situation. She received praise for her calamari from the duo, and later impressed the hosts with her chicken and coconut curry, green papaya chutney, apple, turnip, and carrot salad, as well as her coconut rice.
At the moment, Gregg couldn’t help but heap praises on her, labeling her as an exceptional cook. He went so far as to say, ‘I kept going from one dish to another, finding it hard to stop tasting, you truly had a fantastic cooking day, something we in the industry consider remarkable.’
