Sir Elton John’s London Palladium Debut: Still Standing with Brandi Carlile’s New Album Launch

Last night, it was clear that Sir Elton John remains resilient, as he successfully took center stage for the first time as the main act at the London Palladium.

Even though he declared his retirement following a five-decade long career in 2023, the allure of competing at the famous 2300-seat stadium proved irresistible.

I had the honor to grace the stage at the Palladium recently, partnering with the talented Brandi Carlile, for a sneak peek of my upcoming album, “Who Believes in Angels,” at 78 years young and still rocking!

Before the live performance set to air on ITV in the UK and CBS in the U.S., Sir Elton John stunned host Dan Levy from Schitt’s Creek with an unexpected revelation on stage.

‘It would be stupid of me not to play tonight,’ Sir Elton said.

As a young lad, I regularly tuned into Sunday Night Live at the Palladium each week, an unmissable spectacle. The allure lay in its star-studded lineup, with many American celebrities gracing our screens, even the Beatles appeared! It was simply extraordinary. Bruce Forsyth served as the host, and it was truly legendary.

In a breath-taking instant that left the crowd astonished, I confessed, “To set the record straight, I’ve never graced the stage of the Palladium before.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share an intriguing fact: Although I’ve graced countless iconic stages worldwide, my performance at The Palladium remains singularly memorable. That was back in 1972, when I had the privilege of sharing the stage with Liberace during the Royal Variety Show.

The extravagant celebrity found the incident quite amusing since it was rare for him to be outshone in terms of costumes.

Sir Elton said: ‘I did a Royal Variety Performance here with Liberace. He was fabulous.

Instead of saying “I thought Ok, Liberace, I’m going to get two fabulous costumes made,” you could rephrase it as “I decided to have two stunning outfits custom-made, just like the colorful suits I had hanging in my dressing room.

In our shared quarters for the evening, an array of trunks stretched before me, one after another. That particular night, he donned an extraordinary suit that resembled an electric lightbulb and illuminated.

‘I thought f***ing hell. You’ve won: game set and match.’

Elton shared, “This is my initial solo appearance here!” The crowd erupted in joy.

At the momentous concert, a glittering gathering of notables graced the venue. This esteemed group consisted of ABBA’s Ulvaeus, the legendary Rolling Stones member Ronnie Wood, vocalist Sophie Ellis Bextor, actress Lily James, comedians David Walliams and Matt Lucas, musician Sam Fender, Jason Momoa from Aquaman, Sacha Baron Cohen known for his role as Ali G, and radio personalities Zoe Ball and Matt Chorley from BBC.

As a die-hard fan of yours, Sir Elton, I’ve always been in awe of your flamboyant collection of spectacles. Imagine my shock when you revealed the number of glasses you own! The figure left me speechless, leaving quite an impression on the gathered guests.

He mentioned that they are stored away since he doesn’t have a very large home. In other words, he estimates he has between 10,000 and 15,000 pairs of sunglasses.

Following the question-and-answer session, the wealthy musician, valued at approximately £450 million, dismissed his recent health issues and delivered a lively performance spanning 75 minutes during the concert.

With American country artist Brandi Carlile by his side, Sir Elton John commenced with the opening track from the album, “Who Believes in Angels”. He then introduced the live premiere of “Swing For The Fences” and a yet-to-be-released song titled “Little Richard’s Bible”.

Later, Carlile played an intimate acoustic piece they co-created – a ballad titled “You Without Me,” which expresses the idea of acknowledging your children as unique individuals.

In my experience as a lifestyle expert, I must confess that motherhood caught me off guard, an unexpected twist given that, as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it’s typically a well-planned journey. But life often surprises us in the most beautiful ways!

Everyone stood up in excitement as Sir Elton John played several hits from his collection, such as “Tiny Dancer,” “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues,” “Your Song,” “Bennie and the Jets,” and “I’m Still Standing.

Last month, the singer assertively shared that his upcoming new studio album, which marks his return after 2021, signifies a fresh chapter in his professional life, essentially labeling it as “Version 2.0” of his career.

The upcoming studio album titled “Who Believes In Angels?” is a joint project featuring American folk singer Brandi Carlile, as well as Sir Elton’s long-standing songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin. It’s scheduled to drop on April 4th.

He also unveiled a new single from the album, the eponymous song ‘Who Believes In Angels?’

Sir Elton noted that this album was among the most challenging he has ever produced, yet it was also one of the most musically rewarding experiences he’s had throughout his career.

As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t help but look back on my past accomplishments with a sense of awe and pride. They’ve been nothing short of extraordinary, simply brilliant! However, what lies ahead is not a continuation, but a fresh chapter in this epic tale I call my life. In my eyes, this moment marks the dawn of my career 2.0, a new beginning filled with limitless potential and uncharted territories.

1) “This location provides me with a sense of progression. It feels as if I’m stepping into a new epoch, eagerly opening the door to embrace what lies ahead in the future.”

2) “This spot offers me a feeling of advancement. Entering here is like venturing into another time period, and I can’t wait to step through the threshold and welcome the future.

The songwriter, struggling with ill health following the loss of much of his sight, has disclosed that a newly composed track addressing mortality caused him to emotionally crumble and ponder deeply upon the remaining time he possesses.

In a fresh installment of the Smartless podcast, he shared his thoughts on the particular track, which he mentioned will be featured as the last song on the forthcoming album he’s working on with Carlile.

As I approach my century, I often ponder, ‘How many more years do I have left?’ With children and a loving spouse, one cannot help but contemplate mortality. When I reached the chorus during that performance, I broke down emotionally for 45 minutes – it was all captured on camera.

On Saturday, 19th April, a special event featuring Elton John and Brandi Carlile is set to be broadcast simultaneously on ITV1 and ITVX within the UK, and on the CBS network in the U.S. on April 6.
