I was so surprised to hear about what Sir Elton John asked his doctor before his surgery! Apparently, he really startled them with a pretty unusual request. It’s just classic Elton – always full of surprises!
The 78-year-old musician has undergone several surgeries in recent years, including both knee replacements and a right hip replacement after a fall. These health issues caused him to postpone his farewell tour in 2021.
In his documentary, Touched By Gold, he described how he collaborated with designer Theo Fennell to transform his old kneecap into a unique piece of jewelry.
Theo and Elton talked about how the necklace was made, and Elton jokingly compared its appearance to an ancient Egyptian artifact.
He recounted asking his surgeon if he could keep his kneecaps after they were removed – first the left one, then the right – a request that apparently surprised the doctor.
Theo explained that they baked the objects to remove moisture. This made them rough and porous, like pumice stone. To finish them, they painted them with acetate and then polished them.

Elton explained that his surgeon told him he had some of the worst knees he’d ever seen. He described a hole in his kneecap as looking like an ancient artifact, almost like something from Egypt.
Theo shared that he’d written the phrase ‘I will no longer bow to any man’ on the back of something, then playfully added, ‘That’s hard to do when you’re missing a kneecap.’
Elton John caused a stir back in October when he debuted a unique accessory – a necklace made from his own kneecap – at the premiere of his new movie, ‘Never Too Late,’ during the London Film Festival’s American Express Gala.
He paired his stylish brown suit with distinctive jewelry that was polished and accented with gold.
You know, I was at the New York premiere of this amazing film about a true icon, and he had everyone laughing when he said, and I quote, ‘Honestly, there’s not much of me left!’ It was a really poignant and funny moment, and it just shows his incredible sense of humor even now.
I’m missing several organs and body parts. Specifically, I don’t have tonsils, adenoids, an appendix, a prostate, or either of my knees and my right hip is also absent.
Honestly, after everything, I’ve only got my left hip remaining. But I’m still standing, and I’m incredibly grateful to all of you – you’re the ones who helped me get here.
Sir Elton John experienced a serious eye infection last year, which unfortunately left him with reduced vision in one eye.

The popular musician, who finished performing concerts in the summer of 2023, has been resting and recovering at home since then.
I’m getting better, but it’s a very slow recovery, and it will be a while before I can see clearly again with that eye.
I’m incredibly thankful for the wonderful doctors, nurses, and my family who have cared for me so well these past few weeks.
Elton shared that he’s been recovering at home this summer and is pleased with how well his healing is going.
Even though he stopped touring last year, he did make an appearance and perform at his famous Oscar party in March.
