Sir Elton John reveals he felt a ‘void’ when he changed his ‘old fashioned’ birthname to boost his career – after admitting he hated it because it reminded him of ‘unhappy memories’
As I reflect upon Elton John’s life and career, it’s clear that he has truly lived a remarkable existence – one filled with music, passion, resilience, and an unwavering spirit. From his humble beginnings to becoming one of the world’s most celebrated musicians, his journey is nothing short of inspiring.
Sir Elton John has revealed he felt a ‘void’ open up after he changed his name to help his career.
In his twenties, the artist decided to leave behind his given name, Reginald Kenneth Dwight, as a means of boosting his professional life.
The seasoned pop star shared that he chose to transform his image due to disliking his initial stage name, yet acknowledged that he now feels remorseful about this change.
He revealed: ‘I realised I’d put everything into my work, my art, my recording. There was nothing underneath it, I was just a void.
‘So I’d left little Reggie behind, but little Reggie was still inside of me.’
Sir Elton was speaking on Good Morning America on Tuesday when he made the surprising confession.
Elton John, known as the Rocketman singer, confessed that he never liked his given name and chose “Elton” to distinguish himself from others.
He said: ‘Reginald is a really old fashioned name, shortened to Reggie, which I hated. But in America it’s quite a popular name.’
He went on to say: ‘But I just didn’t like it. As soon as I could I changed my name.
“I thought that nobody had my name, Elton, so I decided to go by that name and become the unique ‘Elton’.
El artista de La Tiny Dancer admitió más adelante que también había deseado dejar atrás su infancia y decidió cambiar su nombre para asumir una personalidad completamente diferente.
In a U.S. talkshow, he expressed that he had desired to move past his childhood self and that image, yet it seemed to persistently follow him.
However, Sir Elton clarified that he later regretted the choice due to feeling empty under his new persona, as he hadn’t fully let go of young Reggie within himself.
In the 1960s, the performer first went by his given name, Reggie, on stage. However, he later chose to abandon this traditional stage name, finding inspiration from his bandmates instead.
In an intriguing twist of fate, my unique moniker is a delightful amalgamation born from the musical camaraderie of Elton Dean, a bandmate in Bluesology, and Long John Baldry. Some speculate that Hercules was inspired by the equine character from the beloved TV series, Steptoe and Son – a name that, much like my own, carries a rich legacy.
Discussing his name change in 1987, Sir Elton once expressed that this transformation granted him an entirely fresh identity, as reported by Metro.
‘I became Elton John, it was like a new lease on life,’ he said.
‘I didn’t particularly like being Reg Dwight. It had too many unhappy memories.
‘I hated the word Reg, anyway. It was just a horrible name. As soon as I was Elton, it was just great. It was like a new personality.’
The celebrity’s confession follows his disclosure that he suffered loss of vision in his right eye during the summer in France. Consequently, he is now unable to perceive, read, or view anything.
The hitmaker, who played his final shows last summer, revealed his eyesight issues in September.
He took to his Instagram with a lengthy post, explaining how he spent the past few months ‘recuperating at home.’
Over the summer, I’ve had a serious eye issue which sadly has resulted in reduced vision in just one of my eyes.
The recovery is happening, albeit at a very gradual pace, and I’ll need a considerable amount of time before the affected eye regains its vision.
I’m incredibly thankful for the exceptional medical team, including the doctors and nurses, as well as my loved ones, who have provided me with incredible care during the past few weeks.
Elton found: ‘I’ve been peacefully recovering at home during the summer, and I feel optimistic about the advancements I’ve achieved in my healing process so far.’
And his health battles of undermined any new music from the star.
In an interview with ABC News recently regarding his latest documentary titled Never Too Late, Elton candidly expressed doubts about his potential to create fresh music due to his current prioritization of his wellbeing.
He said: ‘It’s been a while since I’ve done anything. I just have to get off my backside. I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France.
It has been approximately four months since I’ve lost my sight, and my left eye isn’t in top condition. However, I remain optimistic and encouraged that things will improve, though I find myself in a bit of a stalemate for now.
“I have the ability to create music in other ways, but when it comes to going into the studio and recording, I’m unsure because I can’t see the lyrics right off the bat.
We’re actively working on making improvements, with our primary focus being on this task right now.
