Sir Elton John admits he didn’t know how to use a washing machine until he was 43 as he reflects on fame and addiction in candid interview
As I delve into the heartfelt narrative of this esteemed figure, it is impossible not to be moved by his extraordinary journey. Sir Elton John, a name synonymous with music and resilience, has time and again demonstrated his ability to rise above adversity. His life story is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for transformation, redemption, and triumph.
As I looked back on my life during a recent candid interview, I confessed that I was completely clueless about operating a washing machine until I turned 43 years old – yes, you read that right! Even with all the success and fame I’ve achieved, there were still everyday tasks like this one that slipped through the cracks.
In a profound and candid conversation with TIME magazine, I, the acclaimed musician and storyteller, at the age of 77 and now facing vision loss, shared some surprising insights into my private life.
He revealed: ‘It was the most embarrassing thing in my life when I went into [drug] treatment that I couldn’t work a washing machine.
Reflecting on my current situation, I find myself rather disheartened. At the age of 43, I’m struggling to operate a washing machine. This seemingly simple task highlights some underlying issues in my life that need addressing, indicating perhaps a lack of basic skills or self-reliance.
The well-known figure commented: “When one is well-known, it’s almost as if there’s an unspoken hierarchy surrounding you. Individuals compete for proximity, and those closest to me often incite jealousy among others.
His lengthy interview comes after the music legend was honoured as TIME’s Icon of the Year.
In other parts of this conversation, the individual mentioned that he had previously handled ex-partners as if they were captives, and displayed rude behavior due to his struggles with substance abuse.
During his renowned career in the 1970s and ’80s, Sir Elton openly acknowledged a destructive dependence on alcohol and cocaine, which left many victims in its wake. Among those adversely affected were some of his past relationships. He eventually sought help and recovered in the ’90s.
He said, “Your choices regarding drugs are disastrous. Desperate for affection, I found myself resorting to taking hostages.
In my experience, I’d connect with someone I admired, and we would spend around three to four months together. However, once they had little else in their life besides our relationship, they would grow to resent me, as they felt suffocated by the lack of personal space and fulfillment outside of our bond.
‘It really upsets me, thinking back on how many people I probably hurt.’
In 1990, Sir Elton checked into Lutheran General Hospital in Chicago for a span of six weeks as an inpatient, undergoing treatment for his struggles with substance abuse (drugs and alcohol) and compulsive eating.
After going into recovery and adopting a 12-step program centered on abstinence, Sir Elton found himself facing his personal flaws as well.
He acknowledged it can be difficult to confront someone about their bad behavior and equally challenging to receive such feedback, he explained. Ultimately, he decided to acknowledge when he was wrong and admit that he had acted inappropriately.
For over three decades, this music legend has maintained a clean and abstinent lifestyle. He attributes this prolonged period of wellness to a greater force that he believes has guided him throughout his life, providing him with the strength needed to conquer his personal struggles in the past.
‘I don’t really believe in the biblical God too much, but I have faith,’ he explained.
Through every stage of my life, I’ve felt a guiding presence that has seen me through some of the toughest times: addiction, despair, isolation, and recovery. This force has been instrumental in helping me find sobriety.
‘He’s been there all the time, I think. I just didn’t acknowledge him.’
In a frank conversation back in 2021, Sir Elton spoke about feeling remorse for his initial encounter with a row of cocaine.
He told Ladbible he ‘just joined in for the sake of it and it became an addiction’, as he recalled the dependency that consumed two decades of his life.
On a Wednesday morning, Sir Elton John made an appearance on Good Morning America, accompanied by his spouse David Furnish. They sat down for a conversation with Robin Roberts where they discussed various aspects of his life, career, and the intimate struggles portrayed in his latest documentary.
He shared that he tragically suffered a loss of vision in his right eye back in July, due to an infection he encountered in the South of France. It has already been four months since then, and he hasn’t regained sight.
Additionally, my left eye isn’t perfect, but there’s optimism and motivation for improvement. We’re actively working towards making it stronger.
‘At the moment that’s really what we’re concentrating on.’
In an effort to reassure concerned fans about his wellbeing, Sir Elton jokingly shared that he and his partner undergo routine blood tests every half a year in Los Angeles. He emphasized that their health is currently at its peak.
“It’s always unfortunate when something like this occurs, because I can neither see, read nor watch anything.
The hitmaker, who played his final shows last summer, revealed his eyesight issues in September.
Recovery is happening, albeit at a very gradual pace, and it may be quite some time until vision is restored in the affected eye.
I’m deeply appreciative of this outstanding medical team comprising doctors and nurses, along with my family, who have tirelessly cared for me during these past few weeks, demonstrating unwavering dedication and compassion.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’ve been peacefully nesting at home this summer, focusing on my well-being. I must say, I’m encouraged by the advancements I’ve made in my healing and recuperation journey so far.
As a devoted admirer, I’m sharing some news that’s hit us all hard: our beloved Rocket Man, Elton John, has shared with ABC News that due to an unfortunate eye infection, he’s currently unable to see, read, or enjoy visual content. It’s tough for us fans to imagine a world without his music, but we’re sending him love and well wishes during this challenging time.
Earlier this month, while speaking to a US news channel regarding his latest documentary titled “Never Too Late,” Elton confessed that he had doubts about his capacity to produce new music, as he is dedicating all his efforts towards prioritizing his health.
He said: ‘It’s been a while since I’ve done anything. I just have to get off my backside. I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France.
It’s been four months since I’ve lost my sight, and my left eye isn’t in the best condition. However, there’s optimism and support that things will get better, but for now, I find myself in a bit of a difficult situation.
“I possess the ability to perform tasks similar to this, yet when it comes to recording in a studio, I’m uncertain because I don’t have lyrics available at first.
Currently, our focus is on making improvements. At this point, that’s primarily where our efforts are directed.
