Sir Elton John, 78, says the last 15 months have been ‘challenging’ as he issues health update on his ‘devastating’ battle with blindness

Elton John has shared that the past fifteen months have been difficult as he deals with potential blindness.

The 78-year-old musician developed a serious eye infection in July 2024, resulting in blindness in his right eye and significantly reduced vision in his left eye.

Elton John recently shared an update about his vision, revealing he’s been unable to see, watch, or read anything for more than a year. He described the situation as ‘devastating’.

It’s been a really difficult time,” he shared with Variety. “Losing sight in my right eye, and with my left eye already having limited vision, the past fifteen months have been incredibly challenging. I haven’t been able to see, watch, or read anything.

I’ve been very fortunate in my life, and I remain optimistic. I’m hopeful that science will eventually find a solution for my condition. Once that happens, I’ll be okay. It feels similar to the progress made with AIDS.

Never lose hope. Stay strong and resilient, and keep persistently working to make things better, even when it’s difficult.

Elton shared that he’s been receiving treatment and has noticed some improvement in his vision in his left eye.

Elton lives with his husband David Furnish, 62, and their sons, Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12. 

The popular musician, who finished performing concerts last summer, shared that he was having trouble with his vision in September 2024.

Elton shared that he’s been battling a serious eye infection this summer, which has sadly resulted in impaired vision in one of his eyes.

I’m getting better, but it’s a very gradual recovery and it will be a while before I can see clearly again with that eye.

I’m incredibly thankful for the wonderful care I’ve received from the doctors, nurses, and my family over the past few weeks.

Elton shared that he’s been resting and recovering at home this summer and is pleased with how well he’s been healing.

And his health battles have undermined any new music from the star.

Elton John recently worried his fans when he shared photos from his hospital bed and pictures of himself in a decorated cast on Instagram.

It turned out things weren’t as they appeared; the singer revealed the whole event was a publicity stunt for a new Spinal Tap movie.

Fans were puzzled by a post from the celebrity, who playfully claimed he’d ‘rocked too hard’ and ended up with a broken bone, sharing concerning photos from a hospital bed.

Elton explained in his post that he was hanging out with the band Spinal Tap and promoting his role in their new movie.

He announced that the new movie, Spinal Tap II, and its accompanying album are both available today. He contributed to the songs ‘Listen To The Flower People’ and ‘Stonehenge’ and expressed his gratitude for being involved.

Elton was seen wearing sparkly leg casts and a neck brace, with flowers, get-well cards, and members of the show’s cast all around him.
