Sir David Jason shares his regret over not being in his long lost daughter’s life for 52 years as he recalls how he REALLY felt the moment he received the ‘most astonishing’ letter that revealed his secret child
As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for human stories, I must say the tale of Sir David Jason is one that resonates deeply. The emotional journey he has embarked upon, reconnecting with his long-lost daughter Abi Harris, is nothing short of extraordinary.
Sir David Jason has expressed his remorse and sorrow about not being part of his estranged daughter Abi Harris’ life for the past 52 years.
As a seasoned lifestyle advisor, I can share a heartwarming story that recently unfolded in my life. You see, I was blessed with a letter – one of the most extraordinary pieces I’ve ever received. It came from a daughter I never knew I had, hidden away as a secret for all these years.
In his recently published memoir titled “This Time Next Year,” David recounts the avalanche of powerful feelings that washed over him when he encountered the transformative letter.
In simple terms, Abi was born to actress Jennifer Hill (known for her role in the James Bond movie “Octopussy”) in the year 1970. This was during a short-lived relationship between Jennifer and someone named David.
Reflecting on an extraordinary encounter that I wish had happened sooner, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sorrow for the missed moments and the time we could have spent together. If only I had met Abi earlier.
Upon finding the letter, David settled himself in his kitchen and reminisced about the trembling in his hands as he began to read it.
David expressed a mix of awe, surprise, worry, sadness, dread, and intense fear when he learned there was a chance he might have another daughter.
In my correspondence, I urged David to undergo an incognito paternity test, as uncertainty had arisen within me. However, it’s crucial for him to understand that I harbor no intentions of seeking financial assistance from him.
In an exclusive preview of his book provided by The Mirror, he expresses: ‘It won’t shock you to know that my hands were trembling by this point. What had I just gone through? I needed to reread the entire piece. I felt compelled to do it again. And then I read it yet another time.’
It didn’t occur to me at all that Abi Harris might be my daughter, given that my past involvement with Jennifer Hill during the production of “Under Milk Wood” in 1970 could have potentially resulted in a child without my knowledge.
In all those almost fifty years since then, I never once found myself dwelling on that particular thought.
David acknowledges that his partner, Gill Hinchcliffe (with whom he has a daughter named Sophie), has been incredibly “understanding and supportive” throughout everything, even though they both experienced quite a shock.
The first time David encountered Abi, they both sensed a ‘natural feeling of detachment’ because of the time that had slipped away from them.
David remarked that it was “quite complex for the two of us to understand or handle,” following their initial meeting.
When he found out about Abi, he also discovered he had a 10-year-old grandson, Abi’s son Charlie.
Without knowing who her father was, Abi started to have doubts when she learned about Jason’s connection with her mother during their time working together on the stage production of Dylan Thomas’s radio play “Under Milk Wood” in 1970.
After discovering they had a similar nose shape, her conviction became even stronger. Now, it’s been verified that their familial relationship is indeed true.
Before 1996, she believed that the man she knew as her father was Geoffrey Davion, who was married to her mother. However, this changed with his passing in 1996.
Ever since they stumbled upon this surprising find, Abi and Charlie have taken trips to see him and spent the holiday season of Christmas with him and his relatives at his residence in Ellesborough, Buckinghamshire.
Besides showing signs of the same exceptional acting talent as him, she’s additionally starred in an episode of Doctor Who and noteworthy, a 2008 revival of Under Milk Wood, in which both Sir David and her mother were also involved.
People who witnessed the renowned actor and Abi standing side by side commented on their strikingly similar faces, and over time, she gathered the nerve to uncover the truth.
In the year 2005, I was bestowed with the honor of knighthood, recognizing my contributions to the world of acting and comedy. Later that same year, I tied the knot with the remarkable Ms. Hinchcliffe, in a heartfelt November ceremony.
Following the heartbreaking loss of my partner, the extraordinary Myfanwy Talog, to breast cancer at the tender age of 45 in 1995, I found myself ready to embark on a new chapter of my life. This led me to start dating Gill.
At the age of 61, the television personality felt the role of father for the first time with the birth of Sophie. He later expressed that having a child came unexpectedly to him, as his life had primarily been centered around achieving success.
Earlier on, he expressed that his life has progressed backward. He never sought fame or wealth, but he yearned for success. The unique path he chose to achieve this was by striving to excel in each job compared to his previous performance, and continuously learning along the way.
‘Because of that I needed to be footloose and fancy free.’
