Sir David Jason, 84, reveals he is planning a family Christmas with daughter he didn’t know existed for 52 years

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for family dynamics and personal growth, witnessing Sir David Jason’s heartwarming journey towards reuniting with his long-lost daughter Abi is truly captivating. The fact that he discovered her at 84 years old, after a brief relationship in the early 1970s, speaks volumes about the unexpected twists and turns life can take.

Sir David Jason has shared details about an upcoming family Christmas celebration, which will feature his newly-discovered daughter Abigail Harris, whom he met just last year at the age of 85.

It wasn’t until a paternity test revealed it in the year 1970, during a short-lived romance with actress Jennifer Hill (who later played James Bond’s love interest), that the well-known character from Only Fools and Horses discovered he had a daughter named Abi.

Sir David openly shared with The Mirror that the initial surprise of meeting Abi has begun to soften as they grow more familiar with one another.

As the initial surprise of discovering I have a previously unknown daughter begins to fade, we’re gradually building our relationship. This journey of exploration is proving to be an enlightening experience for both of us.

Recently, it was Abi’s birthday and Sir David hosted a Sunday meal at his residence to celebrate. They commemorated the event with cake and presents, one of which was a fresh copy of his latest book.

He mentioned that for reasons beyond our power to change, our paths finally crossed, making this birthday celebration particularly meaningful as it marks the end of years where we couldn’t celebrate together.

Apart from acting, the performer expressed his desire to develop a close relationship with his grandson, whom he affectionately calls “Charlie with the great hair,” due to his impressive head of hair.

I’m also encouraging him to explore model building, as I believe it offers a peaceful and creative outlet for individuals of all ages in our fast-paced world. Plus, it doesn’t require batteries or electricity.

Sir David pondered deeply on the feeling of regret for not being part of Abi’s early life, yet he stays hopeful about cultivating a bond with her in the future.

Over the Christmas season, there are arrangements being made for us to spend quality time together as a family. Additionally, we’re planning a modest gathering to celebrate his 85th birthday in February.

When David found the “remarkably surprising” letter, he took a seat in his kitchen and remembered the trembling in his hands as he began to read it.

David expressed a mixture of astonishment, concern, sadness, and sheer terror, upon discovering the potential for having another little girl.

In her letter, Abi suggested that David should undergo a confidential paternity test as she had doubts, yet made it clear that she did not seek any monetary assistance from him.

In The Mirror’s exclusive look at his new book, he says: ‘You will be unsurprised to learn that my hands were shaking by now. What had I just read? I had to go back and read the whole thing again. And then I had to read it again. And then again after that.

It never occurred to me that Abi Harris might be my daughter, given that the romance between Jennifer Hill and I during our work on “Under Milk Wood” in 1970 could have resulted in a child without my awareness.

In all those almost fifty years since then, I hadn’t once thought about that particular idea.

David acknowledges his partner, Gill Hinchcliffe (with whom he has a child named Sophie), for her exceptional supportiveness and comprehension through everything, even though they both experienced a significant shock.

The first time David encountered Abi, they both sensed a ‘natural feeling of estrangement’ as a result of the time that had passed between them.

David mentioned it was quite complex for the two of them to grasp, following their initial meeting.

As Abi didn’t know who her father was, she started having suspicions when she learned about Jason’s connection with her mother during their joint performance in the 1970 stage version of the Dylan Thomas radio play “Under Milk Wood.

After discovering they had a similar nose shape, her conviction became even stronger. Now, it’s officially confirmed that their lineage is connected.

In 2005, David received a knighthood recognizing his outstanding contributions to acting and comedy. That same year, he tied the knot with Ms. Hinchcliffe in November.

Following the death of his girlfriend of twenty years, Welsh actress Myfanwy Talog who passed away due to breast cancer at age 45 in 1995, he then began dating Gill.

At 61 years old, the celebrity felt like he had become a dad for the first time, and afterwards, he admitted that having a child was unexpected for him since most of his life revolved around achieving success; he described it as something that had been suddenly placed upon him.

In a nutshell, my journey has been about going backward, if you will. It wasn’t the limelight or wealth that captivated me, but rather the pursuit of success. The only means I found to achieve this was by consistently aiming to surpass myself in every job and learning from each experience along the way.
