Sinners: Vampire Rules You Didn’t Know
The film titled “Sinners” adheres to many classic vampire guidelines, yet it subtly deviates from some supernatural creature norms within its narrative. Upon its premiere, reviews for “Sinners ” have been outstanding, with Mae Abdulbaki of Ebaster awarding it a 9 out of 10. The movie, helmed by Ryan Coogler, boasts an almost flawless rating of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes (courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes). These exceptional ratings demonstrate that “Sinners ” is among the finest films released this year.
Although “Sinners” portrays a band of vampires causing havoc in a rural town in Mississippi during 1932, it doesn’t strictly adhere to the typical conventions of vampire lore. While some vampire norms are featured in the film or play significant roles within its narrative, others remain unexplored by the conclusion of “Sinners.” At present, there is no confirmation about a sequel to “Sinners,” but for now, here’s a rundown of the vampire rules that Coogler’s horror movie both upholds and defies:
This version aims to be more conversational and easy-to-understand while maintaining the original meaning.
8. Vampires Need To Be Invited Into Buildings
Follows
In many tales about vampires, these supernatural beings are unable to enter a building unless given permission first. This crucial rule is significantly emphasized in the story of “Sinners”. Early on in the movie, Remmick queries whether he can enter Joan and Bert’s residence, which sets the stage for this rule. Once inside their home, Remmick transforms both Joan and Bert into vampires, marking them as the initial members of his growing coven. At Club Juke, they attempt to gain entry by being invited, but Smoke and Stack deny them access.
Had Smoke and their fellow survivors known that they were confronting vampires, staying within the building would have ensured their safety. Yet, driven by a desire to protect townsfolk from being turned into vampires, Grace welcomed them instead, leading to an intense confrontation between humans and Sinners. Once invited in, the vampires launched an attack on Smoke and the humans, resulting in numerous casualties. In the aftermath of this vampire assault, only Smoke and Sammie remained alive.
7. Vampires Don’t Have Reflections
Breaks
In the fictional world of “Sinners”, the absence of reflection in vampires is not explicitly discussed or portrayed. This rule originates from the notion that mirrors show one’s true essence rather than physical appearance. As they are considered undead and lacking a soul, it is generally accepted in many horror stories that vampires do not possess reflections. In horror films, this lack of reflection can serve as a clue for human characters to identify potential vampires. However, this particular method is omitted in the series “Sinners”.
In the movie “Sinners”, the absence of the vampire’s reflection could have been illustrated in Joan and Bert’s house, or by making use of the car mirrors outside Smoke and Stack’s club. Given that numerous vehicles are typically parked outside the club, characters like Bo might have attempted to evade the vampires by checking their car mirrors for any signs of them. If he failed to spot them in the mirrors, this could have served as an explanation for his transformation into a vampire. This could have added another suspenseful scene to “Sinners”, but the film opted not to delve into the subject of vampire reflections.
6. Using Garlic Can Weaken A Vampire
Follows
One rule that the characters in “Sinners” adhere to regarding vampires is their aversion to garlic. In many vampire tales, garlic seems to cause these creatures discomfort or even physical pain when they are exposed to it. Some stories even suggest that a large amount of garlic can be lethal to a vampire. Over the past few centuries, this rule has gained significant popularity due to garlic’s strong antibacterial properties, which help prevent decay and deter vampires.
In the series Sinners, though garlic doesn’t kill vampires outright, it does have an effect on them – they recoil and experience physical discomfort when exposed to it. When the characters realize they are dealing with vampires, they even resort to eating a clove of garlic as a precaution against being bitten themselves. At first, Pearline is hesitant due to her dislike for garlic, causing some unease among the survivors, but eventually, she goes along with it, confirming that she isn’t a vampire.
5. Vampires Cast No Shadows
Breaks
In many terrifying tales of vampires, they don’t have reflections and also do not cast shadows. This rule holds true because of their spiritless existence, serving as a clear sign of vampirism. To put it simply, the absence of both reflection and shadow can help identify a vampire, since these phenomena are easily observable with the naked eye. Yet, it’s worth noting that this peculiarity is not mentioned in ‘Sinners’.
In the movie Sinners, since vampires can’t stand sunlight, it might not be optimal to demonstrate that they have no shadows on screen. Yet, despite Smoke and Stack’s club being dimly lit, there were potential light sources that could have revealed the absence of shadows for the vampire characters. This could have hinted earlier in the film that characters like Stack and Mary were actually vampires when they were in the club. However, it appears as though director Coogler chose not to emphasize this rule in Sinners.
4. Vampires Can Be Killed With Wooden Stakes To The Heart
Follows
In many tales about vampires, it’s often depicted that the most common method to eliminate these supernatural beings is by piercing them through the heart with a piece of wood, typically a stake. This act signifies a spiritual cleansing and frees the soul confined within the undead body. Notably, this is the primary means by which characters in the series ‘Sinners’ dispatch vampires. Before Remmick and his fellow vampires arrive at the club, all the human attendees ensure they have wooden stakes on hand for protection.
At the peak of the story, Smoke utilizes a wooden stake to end Annie’s life following her vampire bite. This action ensures her spirit can proceed to the afterlife, honoring a prior commitment he made. Regrettably, he cannot perform the same act for his brother Stack. Their climactic battle concludes the movie, but instead of killing Stack, Smoke spares him. In the post-credits scene of Sinners, this decision leads to him encountering an older Sammie later on. Crucially, Smoke also stakes and eliminates Remmick, eradicating the evil that he represented.
3. Sunlight Can Kill Vampires
Follows
In contemporary portrayals of vampires, being destroyed by sunlight has become a standard feature. Contrastingly, in Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, the title character was merely weakened by sunlight. However, this destructive power of sunlight over vampires is a rule that can be found in films such as 1922’s Nosferatu, where Count Orlok was ultimately destroyed by the sun. This explains why modern vampires are often depicted spending their days resting and emerging only at night.
In the opening scenes of “Sinners“, we learn that sunlight causes vampires like Remmick to combust. Towards the film’s conclusion, Smoke slays Remmick, and as dawn breaks, all the remaining vampires outside the club ignite due to the sun. This massacre allows Smoke and Sammie to swiftly eliminate many vampires simultaneously, having previously faced difficulties in eliminating them during nighttime hours. Interestingly, only Stack and Mary – the two vampires from “Sinners” – manage to escape being incinerated by the sun.
2. Vampires Can Be Killed With Shots To The Head
Breaks
In the realm of vampire tales, not every story adheres to a universal method for dispatching these creatures. Some narratives require humans to devise unconventional means to eliminate vampires, like garlic, sunlight, religious artifacts, or silver. Conversely, certain stories portray vampires as susceptible to being killed by a gunshot to the head. In the story “Sinners”, firing at a vampire’s head might inflict pain, but it won’t result in their demise.
It’s clear that Cornbread has been shot when he attempts to bite Smoke at the club entrance. After grabbing Smoke’s arm, Smoke hastily retrieves his gun and shoots Cornbread in the head, causing him to fall. Amazingly, Cornbread manages to get back up after this. Throughout the rest of the film, Cornbread sports a conspicuous bullet wound on his face from the gunshot, yet he appears perfectly healthy. Consequently, though it may temporarily hinder them, shooting vampires in the head does not result in their death in Sinners.
1. Vampires Are Immortal (Or Have Prolonged Lives)
Follows
Because vampires are thought to be immortal, they don’t die naturally like humans do. Unless they’re destroyed by other means mentioned earlier, vampires could theoretically live eternally or at least much longer than humans. In the movie Sinners, most of the vampires transform during its events, but Remmick is a more seasoned vampire who was already 600 years old during that time, demonstrating that vampires can live for a very long time, possibly forever.
In the conclusion of “Sinners”, Remmick meets his demise, however, Stack and Mary manage to make it through the movie’s events and reappear sixty years later, in 1992. Upon their return to Sammie’s club, it becomes evident that they have not aged a bit since their initial encounter. This implies that the vampires from “Sinners” will remain at the same age they were when turned for all eternity, as long as they are not destroyed by means other than death. It remains uncertain whether there will be a sequel to “Sinners”, but it would certainly be thrilling to witness more of Stack and Mary in the 90s.
