Sinners’ Ryan Coogler Shares What It Was Like Showing The Film To Spike Lee, And I Wish I Could’ve Been A Fly On The Wall
While it’s often said that meeting your heroes might disappoint you because they can’t live up to your high expectations, some may view this as an indication of cowardice. After all, there’s always the risk that things could go badly and part of your beliefs could be dismantled. However, there’s also a chance that such an encounter could result in one of the most memorable experiences you’ll ever have. If you’re still uncertain, consider the excitement director Ryan Coogler felt when he had the opportunity to share his latest 2025 movie, “Sinners,” with one of his idols – the esteemed Spike Lee.
Recently, Coogler spoke about his story as a guest on the episode of “7PM In Brooklyn With Carmelo Anthony.” During their talk, they discussed Spike Lee’s upcoming remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “High And Low,” starring Denzel Washington. It was noted that Lee had been a previous guest on the show and referred to “Sinners” as an exceptional cinematic experience he had recently enjoyed, which Coogler found humbling. Coogler then shared his admiration for Spike Lee’s biopic “Malcolm X” from 1992, and spoke about the emotional impact of watching Lee’s latest film in a theater.
1. Replaced colloquial language with more common, understandable phrases.
2. Clarified the emotional impact of Spike Lee liking the movie.
3. Used simpler sentence structures for easier reading.
Experiencing genuine recognition from anyone can stir deep emotions… but receiving it from someone you’ve admired and aspired to emulate your entire life? Well, I believe if any of us found ourselves in the situation Ryan Coogler describes, we wouldn’t be able to hold back our tears.
Indeed, receiving approval and praise from Spike Lee was significant, but the truth is that Sinners received near-universal acclaim from nearly everyone who watched it before and during its cinematic premiere. The crime/horror film, featuring Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo, has garnered exceptional reviews from both critics and audiences (I myself awarded it a five-star rating for TopMob). In 2025, it became one of the most successful box office hits. The movie is still showing in certain domestic locations, but as of now, it has generated $278 million domestically and $364.5 million globally.
The movie “Sinners” really shines when viewed in a cinema setting, but I believe it won’t lose its power when it transitions to home video markets. At present, you can rent or buy the film digitally from major online platforms, and from this Friday, July 4, HBO Max subscribers will be able to stream it. For those who prefer physical copies, pre-orders are now open for the 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD versions, which will be available starting July 8.
