Sinners Dominates Box Office
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’m thrilled to share that over the past two weekends, “Sinners” has reigned supreme at the box office, securing the top position once again and raking in a staggering $45 million. This impressive feat showcases its undeniable allure and popularity among moviegoers.
Over the weekend, the horror movie featuring Michael B. Jordan and directed by Ryan Coogler brought in approximately $45 million at the U.S. box office. This represented a slight decrease compared to the $48 million it took home the previous week, as reported by The Numbers.
Meanwhile, a controversial film that was heavily hyped continued to tank at the box office.
As a dedicated follower of all things Disney, it was quite surprising to learn that the recent remake of Snow White, featuring the talented Rachel Zegler and the remarkable Gal Gadot, only managed to rake in $431,000 at this past weekend’s box office.
The production cost of Snow White, not including promotions, could reach as high as $270 million. In addition, hundreds of millions were spent on marketing and advertising. For the film to actually be profitable, it needs to earn at least twice or thrice its budget. To date, it has grossed a total of $195,167,235 globally.
In the end, a well-known classic that had been brought back to cinemas after its original release surpassed the contentious Disney remake.

In the weekend’s box office, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith earned $25,200,000, securing the second position after its re-release on April 25th.
Despite being released two decades ago, the movie continues to be influential, as it managed to secure the second spot in its rankings 20 years after its initial release in 2005.
As a devoted fan, I was thrilled to be among the cinema-goers who helped The Accountant 2, led by Ben Affleck, secure its impressive box office opening at number three, raking in an astounding $24,492,743 on its debut.
In other words, the follow-up to the 2016 movie “The Accountant” premiered in theaters on April 25, with an estimated production cost of $80 million.
In its opening weekend, the Minecraft film earned a total of $22.7 million, marking a significant decrease compared to the $40.5 million it made during the previous weekend.
After its release on April 4, the hit movie maintained the top spot for two consecutive weeks in the box office charts. However, during the weekend of April 18, it moved down to second place.
Fifth position went to Until Dawn with earnings of $8,015,000, while The King of Kings came in sixth with a total of $4,018,664.

The studio’s film The Legend of Ochi also came in ninth place with $1,443,157.
The concert film Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII secured the 10th spot with $1,322,827.
The movie, originally released in 1972, is being re-introduced to theaters with a 4k remastering, and it’s only showing at select locations. You can catch it not just in regular theaters but also on IMAX screens.
Studio executives expressed worries that the studio system might be in jeopardy, following concerns raised by Sinners over a deal made between director Coogler and Warner Brothers. This deal was initially agreed upon when the studio acquired them.
Initially, individuals labeled as “Sinners”, who are reported to require a revenue of $170 million just to cover their costs (or ‘breakeven’), were initially valued at around $90 million for the filmmaker Ryan Coogler, whose previous works include Black Panther and Creed.
According to rival studio executives who spoke with Vulture, Ryan Coogler’s agreement giving him a portion of box office earnings, as well as ownership of the movie after a 25-year period, sets a potentially risky and influential standard.

The executives stated that this new business agreement might signal the demise of the traditional studio system, since creatives are now experiencing unprecedented financial prosperity.
As a devoted follower, I find myself pondering over the groundbreaking business agreement between Warner Bros. and Kugler, an agreement that has the executive team in a bit of a sweat due to the potential precedent it might establish. This is based on information shared by studio insiders with Vulture.
In late 2023, the screenplay for the upcoming movie sparked significant curiosity upon its release, leading to offers starting to come in as early as January 2024.
The success of the movie was further boosted by the involvement of Jordan and Coogler, who previously teamed up to create the 2018 blockbuster Black Panther, earning a staggering $1.4 billion at global box offices.
The film, taking place in 1932, focuses on twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who operate a business in Mississippi.
In addition to the main cast, the film includes Miles Caton, Saul Williams, Andrena Ward-Hammond, Jack O’Connell, Tenaj L. Jackson, David Maldonado, Percy Bell, and Aadyn Encalarde.

According to Variety’s report from last Sunday, the movie that garnered favorable reviews from critics was shown in a total of 3,308 theaters across North America.
David A. Gross, a consultant from FranchiseRe, stated that this opening scene is perfect for a horror movie in the period genre. He believes it will perform well and sustain its success over time.
According to Gross, the investment made in the movie will have a lasting impact, creating a challenging standard for profitability.
As an over-the-moon fan, I’d put it like this: “Partnering with Ryan Coogler on this critically acclaimed, visually stunning masterpiece has been nothing short of thrilling! IMAX is beyond proud to have contributed to the movie’s successful debut as ‘Sinners’ graced our screens.
