Sinners
Sinners is making a major splash at the box office.
Instead, let’s rephrase it as: The media response to Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan’s film has taken center stage itself. Last Sunday, Variety endorsed an article by Rebecca Rubin discussing the worldwide box office earnings through a tweet.
In its worldwide premiere, the movie titled “Sinners” garnered a total of $61 million. This is an impressive start for an original R-rated horror film. However, considering that Warner Bros. invested approximately $90 million in production costs before accounting for global marketing expenses, it’s still a bit of a stretch to say that profitability has been achieved yet.

This sparked a bit of discussion among entertainment personalities, who expressed their thoughts on the insightfulness of this statement.
Under which circumstances would such a headline be appropriate, considering a new studio film’s initial box office earnings amounted to $60 million?

In an unusual turn of events, the Hollywood production industry, which had been insisting for weeks that movies such as “Snow White” and “Captain America: Brave New World” might somehow still be profitable, made a peculiar decision.
Variety: “WHY DIDN’T THE MOVIE MAKE ALL ITS BUDGET BACK IN THREE DAYS”
— Joe Russo (@joerussotweets) April 20, 2025
And, of course, there were insinuations that their may be some “other” motive behind the framing.
Could it be that @variety also discussed Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, a film that saw a 10% decrease in domestic box office revenue despite playing on 10% more screens pre-pandemic, and was made at the same budget with a similar deal structure? Was their coverage of this movie comparable?

The current version of the article, accessible via the Wayback Machine, includes the following paragraph.

According to Joe Russo’s tweet, there’s a common practice in Hollywood that a movie needs to earn back its production costs during the opening weekend to potentially become profitable. This is because the earnings tend to decrease with each subsequent weekend, often following an exponential pattern. For instance, it’s not unusual for a “successful” film to experience a 50% drop in gross revenue on the second weekend. Furthermore, the box office earnings must cover theater fees, advertising expenses, and production costs before becoming profitable. As the initial article notes, Sinners is up against several challenges before turning a profit. Being an original intellectual property means it lacks a pre-existing audience, its R rating restricts younger audiences who require adult supervision, and it’s a horror movie being released in the spring.

Good news for Ryan Coogler and Sinners, though, it seems to have some box office staying power!
The opening weekend set a new record for any original film this decade, yet the true tale unfolds in the events that are currently taking place.
For its second week at the box office, Sinners maintained the top spot with a modest 6% decrease in ticket sales. Notably, there was an uptick in female audience members and viewings on expansive formats such as IMAX.

Compared to its opening, “The Accountant 2” made $24.5 million over the weekend, placing it third after “Sinners” and the re-release of “Revenge of the Sith”. In terms of films with strong name recognition and online hype, none surpasses “Snow White”. However, the second weekend earnings for this year’s live action remake dropped a significant 70%.
In “Sinners,” Michael B. Jordan portrays twin siblings, Smoke and Stack, who establish a juke joint during the Great Depression in Mississippi. However, their lives take a supernatural turn when they encounter vampires.

During a time where it appears that each new project needs to be a high-budget adaptation of an established franchise, Ryan Coogler’s film “Sinners” could potentially pierce through the haze and pave the path for future studio productions.
