Johnny Mathis, a singer who’s been delighting audiences since the ’50s, is stepping back from live performances, as revealed by his team on Wednesday.

Johnny Mathis is getting close to turning 90 this year, and due to his advanced age and worsening memory problems, it’s with great sadness that we have to announce his decision to retire from touring and live performances.

Prior to the Grammy Awards on Sunday evening, the longtime music executive transformed his party at the Beverly Hilton into a charity event benefiting MusiCares, specifically focusing on raising funds for fire relief.

Mathis, who has scheduled four performances in April and May as his final acts, has decided to call off concerts planned for July, August, October, and November, including those in Biloxi, Mississippi, and several venues across Pennsylvania.

About a decade back, the six-time Grammy Award winner captivated Clive Davis and his guests at his annual pre-Grammys event, with the unusual hometown performance fueling speculation that he could experience a comeback similar to that of standards singers Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand.

In that moment, Davis shared with The Times his impression of a crowd that was astonished by one of the 20th century’s top-selling singers: “Individuals running live shows were inquiring of me, ‘How can we get hold of him? Why doesn’t he perform more often? See what effect he has on an audience!’

Mathis understood that he’d delivered an exceptional performance that particular evening, yet he’d come to realize through experience that it wasn’t always the case, nor should it be considered his ultimate aim. Every show isn’t destined to be his finest.
