Singer Gets Homophobic Abuse Despite Not Being Gay

Sharon Spiteri admitted that she experiences ‘discrimination based on perceived sexual orientation,’ even though she is not homosexual, as she openly discussed being subjected to judgment due to her appearance.

At the Metro Pride Awards held on Wednesday, the 57-year-old Texas singer (who is wedded to chef Bryn Williams, aged 47) shared thoughts about the inappropriate remarks during her speech.

Previously, Sharleen recounted instances where music executives advised her to alter her appearance, and pointed out that some people mistakenly presume she’s a lesbian due to her short hairstyle.

She shared with Metro: “Many discriminatory remarks directed at me, surprisingly humorous, often originate from.

In other words, when they said, “Well, I’m not. But what does it matter? I’m not,” to me, that statement seems inappropriate. It seems as though they are implying their sexuality and then dismissing its relevance. To me, basing judgments about a person based on assumptions about their sexuality is unfair and inappropriate.

Sharleen shared that others often assume her sexuality based on her clothing style, and she found this to be quite astonishing or absurd.

The performer remarked, “People often say the most absurd things such as ‘You have short hair.’ It’s mind-boggling. ‘Because you’re a lesbian, right?’ They assume just because I have short hair, I must be a lesbian. I find myself asking, ‘Are you out of your mind? Or are you just plain insane?’ I can’t comprehend such a comment.

Initially, when Sharleen was signed to a recording label, the music industry executives advised her to alter her appearance.

In an April interview, the singer openly disclosed that she hasn’t had a fantastic rapport with the music industry.

Sharleen established Texas after working as a hairstylist in Glasgow, and the band swiftly gained popularity following the release of their first hit single “I Don’t Want A Lover.

However, upon receiving her major opportunity, she was informed by entertainment professionals that she appeared as if she were male and a lesbian.

In an episode of the “I Never Thought It Would Happen” podcast with Chris Difford, Sharleen recalled: ‘The day I was signed, the managing director at Mercury Records at that time would often call me the “faulty heater”. He’d ask, “What’s this faulty heater got going on?”‘

At the age of 18, I found myself exclaiming something rather assertive in a less-than-polite manner, marking my debut into the music industry. Interestingly enough, this unexpected outburst turned out to be quite beneficial for me as it instilled courage and determination within me. To put it simply, it made me say ‘no’ without hesitation. I consider myself a fair person, so…

‘They used to say I dressed like a boy. People assumed for years that I was a lesbian. This was because of my short hair and big boots.’

Sharleen observes that while some of the perspectives from her teenage years have evolved, they seem to be less apparent or concealed nowadays.

She stated: ‘Although they may continue to speak it indirectly, the issue remains. Some people claim that things have improved, but it’s actually still present; it’s simply camouflaged now. It’s not visible in the open, but rather skillfully concealed.’

Presently, the band known as Texas comprises members such as Sharleen, Johnny McElhone, Ally McErlaine, Eddie Campbell, Tony McGovern, and Cat Myers – this group was established in 1986.

Before soaring to fame in rock band Texas, Sharleen worked at the Irvine Rusk salon in Glasgow.
