Singer Dave Dobbyn is left broken-hearted after legendary music manager dies: ‘It’s a very sad day’

Legendary New Zealand singer, Sir Dave Dobbyn, has taken the lead in paying tribute following the passing of his long-term manager, Lorraine Barry, on Monday.

Born in Northern Ireland, Barry later established a significant presence in New Zealand, playing a crucial part in overseeing the careers of artists like Dobbyn, hip-hop artist Tom Scott, and groups such as Avantdale Bowling Club and Home Brew.

She died at her Auckland home, after suffering a long illness.

Her death was confirmed in a heartbreaking social media statement.

The sad news came that Lorraine passed away yesterday. She was resting peacefully at her charming Titirangi residence, basking in the sunlight.

As a devoted admirer, I’m deeply moved and share the sorrow felt by countless others who crossed paths with her, whether as mentors, inspirations, or supporters. In these challenging times, let our collective affection serve as a comforting embrace to the music world and the broader community – a gesture of love extended on her behalf.

In my professional journey, I had the privilege of serving as an international marketing manager for an astounding 16 years at the esteemed Virgin Records in the United Kingdom.

Throughout her professional journey, she worked alongside renowned artists such as the Spice Girls, Massive Attack, John Lee Hooker, the Chemical Brothers, Ice-T, and Soul II Soul.

Dave Dobbyn, the artist behind “Slice of Heaven,” posted a touching throwback picture of them together, accompanied by heartwarming sentiments as the caption.

Today is an incredibly sad day for my family, friends, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Lorraine. She was always honest and straightforward in her actions. Her intentions were always clear and accurate.

From the very beginning, we felt an instant connection. I grew accustomed to sharing my thoughts with her because of her keen intuition and shrewd intellect.

He added she had been an incredible manager in the two decades she had represented him.

She possessed an exceptional ability to connect with others, showing no tolerance for silliness. After twenty-one years, it continues to baffle me that she is no longer around.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but wonder what Lorraine might say about these new developments. She’d likely remind me to keep calm and stay true to our well-tended path. After all, that’s how we’ve always rolled!

‘All who dealt with her had a deep respect for her. Rest in eternal peace.’

New Zealand’s Six60 bassist Chris Mac expressed a tribute in these words: ‘She is deeply missed. Thankful for the time I knew her.’

‘Sending so much love. Such a kind brilliant woman,’ NZ radio presented Sharyn Casey chipped in.

‘A gem of a woman. Heartbroken for us all,’ added NZ country singer Tami Neilson.

Barry is survived by her long-term husband Ross.
