Sinéad O'Connor's cause of death is revealed a year after the Irish singer died

As a movie reviewer with a background in music and a deep appreciation for the complexities of artists’ lives, I was saddened to learn of Sinéad O’Connor’s untimely death last year due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. The image of her tearing up a picture of the pope during her iconic 1992 Saturday Night Live performance still resonates with me, as it did for millions around the world. Her defiance and raw emotion on that stage were captivating, and her music continued to move us long after that moment.

Irish artist Sinéad O’Connor, known for her singing and activism, passed away in the previous year due to long-term COPD and asthma, as mentioned in reports based on her death certificate.

I was sadly saddened to learn of the passing of Sinead O’Connor, the talented singer known for her powerful rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U.” In 1992, she made headlines when she infamously destroyed a picture of the pope during an appearance on Saturday Night Live. Tragically, she left us too soon at the age of 56, on July 26, 2023.

According to the Irish Independent’s report, the singer experienced a worsening of her chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma, which was complicated by a mild lower respiratory infection. Her ex-husband, John Reynolds, registered her death last week. The death certificate lists these conditions as the causes.

Last July, The Times received confirmation from the Metropolitan Police that O’Connor was discovered unconscious at her residence in South East London, and her passing was not under investigation as a potential crime.

Previously in 2021, the coroner’s court in London clarified that O’Connor passed away due to “normal physiological processes,” leading to perplexity regarding the details of her demise, as this term is frequently linked to individuals who expire from old age.

According to the Coroners’ Society of England & Wales, as expressed in their January statement given to People, it is commonly believed that death occurs naturally if the available evidence suggests that the cause was most likely a disease progression unfolding on its own.

As a cinephile with an interest in health matters, I’d put it this way: COPD, a chronic inflammatory condition that I’ve come to learn about, affects the lungs by obstructing the airflow. This happens due to long-term exposure to irritating gases or particles, such as cigarette smoke, which can be quite harmful. Unfortunately, individuals living with COPD face an increased risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer, and other health complications.

After several weeks had passed since her passing, O’Connor was laid to rest in her seaside hometown of Bray, Ireland, following a heartfelt community tribute filled with fans singing in unison to her rendition of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” as they accompanied her flower-adorned hearse.

The National Wax Museum Plus in Dublin intends to honor O’Connor with a wax figure, but this decision has sparked controversy. Last week, the museum’s portrayal of “All Apologies” singer O’Connor received strong criticism from the public. His brother John voiced his disapproval to the BBC, deeming it as insensitive.

He told Liveline on Irish radio last week, “It bore no resemblance to her and I found it utterly unattractive.”

In a statement released on Friday, the museum acknowledged the statue issue and pledged to enhance the display for greater accuracy.

As a movie lover and a huge fan of Sinead O’Connor, I’m thrilled to share that we’re embarking on an exciting new journey. We’re determined to bring her true essence and iconic image to life through a newly crafted wax figure. Our dedicated team of talented artists will get straight to work on this project, meticulously focusing on every detail to ensure an authentic representation of Sinead’s legacy.
