Simu Liu Supports Casting Melissa Barrera To Replace Gal Gadot As The DCU’s Wonder Woman

A new actress will be taking on the role of Wonder Woman in the upcoming DC Universe movie. With Gal Gadot finishing her portrayal of the character after the previous DC movie timeline wrapped up, Diana Prince is being reimagined for James Gunn’s new franchise.

Melissa Barrera is a fan-favorite choice to play Wonder Woman in the DC Universe, and Simu Liu, known for his role as Shang-Chi, agrees. Liu, who worked with Barrera on the film The Copenhagen Test, recently told Joblo that he believes she’d be perfect for the part.

He praised the actress, saying she consistently challenges herself. Liu specifically recalled moments during stunt training where her abilities reminded him of Wonder Woman, adding that he believes she is incredibly skilled and impressive.

In an April 2025 interview with A Shot Magazine, Ana de Armas Barrera responded to rumors that fans wanted her to play Wonder Woman in the DC Universe. She explained that she first heard the idea from a friend on Twitter about a year prior, and found it interesting, particularly because of the positive message the character embodies.

She also stated that DC Studios hadn’t reached out to her regarding the role, emphatically responding, “Of course not!” when asked. Barrera then discussed the possibility of being cast as the next live-action Wonder Woman.

Melissa Barrera hopes the next actor cast in a major superhero role – whether for Marvel or DC – truly understands and captures the spirit of the character. Given the huge audience these films reach, she believes it’s important for the actor to use their newfound platform responsibly and be a positive role model, rather than simply focusing on personal gain.

While a director hasn’t been chosen yet for the new Wonder Woman movie in the DC Universe, a screenwriter has been. Ana Nogueira, who wrote the script for the upcoming Supergirl film starring Milly Alcock, will be writing the screenplay for the Wonder Woman reboot.

Although Wonder Woman hasn’t been officially cast, she made a quick appearance in the first chapter of the DCU, “Gods and Monsters,” as an animated character in Creature Commandos. Frida Gustavsson and Adria Arjona are among the actresses who have also expressed interest in playing the iconic role.

The DCU’s Wonder Woman has not landed a release date yet from DC Studios.
