While fans eagerly anticipate Simu Liu’s return as Shang-Chi in the next installment and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, he’s currently starring in a new series that began streaming on Peacock on December 27th.
The new eight-part spy series became a streaming sensation right away, according to FlixPatrol. Called The Copenhagen Test, it quickly rose to the top of Peacock’s charts when it premiered and stayed there on December 29th.
The new spy series launched on HBO Max across parts of Asia and quickly became a hit. It reached number one in Indonesia and Malaysia within just two days. It also ranked highly in other countries, coming in second in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore, and third in Thailand.
Thomas Brandon developed the spy series and led it creatively with Jennifer Yale. He wrote the first two episodes, as well as the season finale, titled “The Orphanage.” The show stars Lana Parrilla alongside Melissa Barrera (known from Scream), Sinclair Daniel (Insidious), Brian d’Arcy James (13 Reasons Why), Mark O’Brien (Nuremberg), and Kathleen Chalfant (Law & Order).
This spy show centers around Alexander Hale, played by Simu Liu, a Chinese-American analyst working at a highly classified agency called The Orphanage. He’s relegated to working in the basement, away from the action.
The story follows a spy who begins to suspect he’s been compromised – that someone within his agency is a mole and he’s the target. He discovers his surveillance systems have been hacked, but pretends everything is normal while secretly working with his team to find the hackers. Meanwhile, a mysterious organization called The Orphanage manipulates his reality, creating a false world around him – complete with a fabricated relationship and a dangerous new assignment – blurring the lines between what’s real and what’s not in his life.
The story emphasizes a turning point where Alexander must decide his own fate and choose where his loyalties truly belong, as the boundaries between right and wrong become unclear.
Critics and viewers alike generally enjoyed the spy series, as reflected in its Rotten Tomatoes scores. Critics gave The Copenhagen Test a 78% rating, and audiences scored it even higher at 81%.
The Copenhagen Test Confirms Secret James Bond Connection
St. George runs The Orphanage, and his leadership style is similar to that of Judi Dench’s character, M, from the recent James Bond films – a calm, authoritative figure in charge.
The Copenhagen Test is streaming on Netflix.
