Simu Liu first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021, but he’ll now team up with the Avengers in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday. As the current series of Marvel films, known as The Multiverse Saga, wraps up in 2027, excitement for Avengers: Doomsday is incredibly high.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Simu Liu discussed the future of his character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly after his appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. He stated he’d be happy to continue playing Shang-Chi “as long as I physically could.”
The actor, 36, explained that he recently appeared in a major Marvel film alongside many established actors, some of whom have played their roles for more than two decades. He added that joining them felt like entering a world they’d built and perfected over years of work, stepping into characters they’d carefully developed and made their own.
In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a cast member explained they push through self-doubt by focusing on simply showing up and doing their best work. They believe that things like feeling like a fraud or being insecure are often just excuses to avoid trying.
Liu finished talking about his time with Avengers: Doomsday and the MCU by saying, “If we could just put aside our own egos and concentrate on the task at hand—what’s the goal, and what’s my character’s role in achieving it?—and then take things one step at a time, maybe after 40 years, someone will look back and wish they could have done work like that.”
Filming for Avengers: Doomsday wrapped up on September 19, 2025. Marvel Studios has revealed most of the cast, but Kevin Feige announced at CinemaCon 2025 that they will be making further casting announcements for the movie, which is scheduled to be released in 2026.
With the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday expected in December 2025, we might finally learn which new characters will appear in the film. Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed Doomsday, are also directing Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude the Multiverse Saga.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026.
