Simone Biles honored in L.A. as champion for kids. Will the GOAT return to compete in 2028 Olympics?
As I read through this interview, it was evident that Simone Biles continues to dazzle and captivate her audience with her grace, humor, and unyielding spirit. Her journey to greatness has been nothing short of remarkable, and she carries herself with the poise and confidence of a true champion.
As a devoted cinephile might say, “I’ve got to hand it to Simone Biles; she’s the leading lady of gymnastics, amassing an impressive collection of accolades. She’s won 11 Olympic medals and a stunning 30 world championship medals, making her the star performer in this grand sport.
She has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and countless other accolades through the years.
This week, Simone Biles received another honor, yet it’s unrelated to gymnastics. The athlete often referred to as the greatest of all time in her sport expresses immense pride about this recognition.
At their 30th anniversary celebration held at Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica on Thursday evening, Friends of the Children honored Biles as a “champion for children.” As a national ambassador with them for five years, Biles was awarded a unique gold and sapphire necklace adorned with their emblem, in recognition of her efforts to help children in foster care, poverty, and other challenging circumstances find empowerment.
In a pre-event conversation with The Times, Biles expressed that it’s a great honor and responsibility for her to work closely with an organization sharing her passion for foster care and underprivileged children. She added that the kids were thrilled about the event, and seeing their excitement just warmed her heart.
Raised by a mother struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction, Biles and her siblings spent considerable time in foster homes. At the age of six, Biles and her younger sister Adria were taken in by their maternal grandfather, Robert Biles, and his wife, Nellie. As Biles grew older, she sought ways to aid children facing similar circumstances as hers. Eventually, through her agent’s efforts, she connected with Friends of the Children.
This organization is a national, non-profit entity that assigns adult mentors to young individuals from kindergarten all the way up to high school graduation. As stated on their website, about one-third of the children in this program have undergone out-of-home placements, and approximately the same number of mentors have previously been through foster care.
Simone Biles shared her heartfelt feelings about foster care, stating, “I’ve always felt deeply connected to these children because I understand their struggles and their journey.” She further emphasized that the kids simply need someone who cares for them sincerely and believes in their potential. That’s where it all begins, and that’s what [the organization] is dedicated to doing – offering these children hope.
Although Biles can’t function as a mentor at the moment, she emphasizes that her role is to be an advocate for those who don’t have a voice. Specifically, she wants to support and expand opportunities for these children and the organization by raising awareness about them.
As a passionate cinephile, I recently had an engaging chat with The Times about a myriad of intriguing topics. Among them was the eagerly anticipated launch of Part 2 of the Netflix documentary titled “Simone Biles Rising,” set to premiere on a Friday. We delved into the thrilling anticipation surrounding the Paris Olympics, discussed the symbolic significance of my coveted GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) necklace, and pondered over the tantalizing question of whether I’ll be gracing Los Angeles with my presence for the 2028 Olympics.

Were you present as well for the debut of the second part of your documentary? I’m curious, are you eager for its upcoming launch?
I can’t help but feel thrilled about it! The number of folks who have approached me, inquiring about when Part 2 will be released, is a testament to their eagerness and anticipation. I’m equally excited for them to catch a glimpse of the unseen aspects of a professional athlete’s journey – a perspective they might not have had before.
Is Part 2 about the Paris Olympics?
Absolutely! Sharing this experience in a unique way seems essential since there are numerous channels broadcasting the competition. However, what makes it special is having a firsthand account from our perspective on the ground, combined with a closer look at certain aspects due to my coaches being microphoned. This could offer an extraordinary opportunity for everyone to gain insight into what we actually go through.
What was it like for you seeing that footage? Was it a different perspective for you as well?
100% certainty. You know, when I’m up there competing, it’s a lot of stress followed by relief, then excitement. However, watching the footage from our own perspective was incredible! It brought back all those feelings, allowing me to re-experience that moment and truly enjoy it again.
During the Olympics, your tweet, “I love my black job,” seemed to touch on politics a bit. Was that your aim to make a slightly political statement?
Initially, I didn’t anticipate such a big reaction. I believed it was a humorous prank, something light-hearted that people would enjoy. However, given the upcoming election, I never intended for it to be taken seriously. I was simply enjoying the Olympic spirit, but unfortunately, it seems everyone has their own interpretation of it.
Do you have any thoughts on the presidential race?
At the moment, I’d rather not disclose that information. You see, my followers might already be aware of my views, and I think we can leave it there for now.
How does it feel to be known as the Greatest of All Time? It appears that you’ve taken ownership of this title in various ways, such as through the necklace, the name of your tour (America’s Gold Tour), and so on.
I think it’s just funny to play around with it because the people that say it, love it. And the people that don’t think I’m the GOAT hate it even more. So it’s just funny for me. I don’t care if you don’t think I’m the greatest of all time. I feel like I’ve been pretty humble my whole entire career, so I still think there are amazing gymnasts who have paved the way for us to be able to do what we do…. And I think we’ve paved the way for the younger generations. So I think it’s really exciting and it’s by no means me walking around with my head high. I just don’t care. I think it’s funny and people like the necklace, so it’s like, whatever.
It’s a great necklace. We did a whole story just on the necklace.
Absolutely! The response was overwhelmingly positive. It was truly spectacular. To be honest, I hadn’t anticipated such a massive reaction, but it was an enjoyable experience nonetheless.
You ought to know by now that pretty much everything you do is gonna blow up.
(Laughs) Yeah, I noticed that. I’m aware. I just ignore it.
Is your tour wrapping up soon?
Absolutely! It’s the 3rd of November in Detroit. We only have six more destinations left. We’re nearing the end and we can hardly contain our excitement. Despite feeling a bit sad, everyone truly relished the experience.
Do you have any plans for after the tour ends?
I’ll be stepping away for a bit. I’m heading out to cheer on my husband, Jonathan Owens from the Chicago Bears. The season started not long ago, and it will be truly thrilling for me to watch him play live.
Sorry, but I have to ask — are you going to be back in L.A. in 2028?
Are you?
Me? Ummm …
(Laughs) See? You never know what can happen in four years. Gotta wait and see.
