Tim Robbins, star of the show Silo, has discussed the dramatic events that unfolded in the latest episode of season three. In episode four, viewers saw Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) unexpectedly reunite with Bernard (Robbins), even though he appeared to have died in a fire at the end of last season.
The TV series takes a very different path than Hugh Howey’s novels – in the books, Bernard clearly died in the airlock scene, but the show surprisingly brings his character back.
In an interview with Radio Times, Robbins discussed the significant changes coming to the show and how they’ll affect its direction.
He explained that season 3 allowed him to portray a very different Bernard – one who had undergone major physical, emotional, and psychological changes.
He discovered everything he believed was true was actually false, and now he’s determined to right the wrongs he’s committed and improve things for himself and those around him – including repairing the damage he’s done to his community. It’s a wonderfully complex role, and he feels fortunate to have the chance to play someone facing such a powerful journey.

Robbins explained that the character is compelling because he’s shrouded in mystery and holds unique knowledge. This information is both a source of strength and a burden for him.
He explained that they would need to do most of the hard work this season to successfully implement the changes, initially sticking closely to established guidelines before adapting as needed.
The show’s first two seasons covered material from the first book. The beginning of the book focuses on Juliette being sent to work as a cleaner, while the latter half takes place in Silo 17 and details the rebellion brewing in Silo 18, according to the actor, known for his role in The Shawshank Redemption.
“And so we followed that roughly. We did a bunch of switcheroos and stuff, but basically that.
Okay, so in the second book, Shift, they didn’t have Juliette appear until the very last page, and honestly, I was like, ‘No way, that won’t work!’ I told Hugh that, and he was surprisingly cool with it. He just said he was excited to see what I’d come up with instead, which was a relief!
He immediately agreed with the idea. We needed to decide on a direction for the story, and we realized a central theme could be about controlling memories. We decided to incorporate this theme into both the backstory and Juliette’s personal story, which gave us a clear path forward and a new obstacle for her to overcome.
