Silo season 2, episode 5 review: Lies, lies, and more lies
As a long-time resident of the silo, I must say that this week’s episode of Silo was quite the rollercoaster ride! The tension is building up like never before, and it feels like we are teetering on the edge of chaos.
In Silo’s second season, episode 5, Knox and Shirley are left pondering their return journey. On the other hand, Bernard decides to shake things up while still orchestrating events subtly.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Silo season 2, episode 5.
In Season 2 of “Silo”, we’re still grappling with a web of deception that doesn’t seem to be confined to just Bernard. The narrative unfolds with various characters caught in a tangled web of truth and falsehood, either intentionally deceiving others or unraveling the deceptions as the story progresses.
What is Solo hiding in Silo season 2, episode 5?
In Silo 17, Juliette is still trying to find a way to create a suit for her return to her own silo. Unfortunately, she didn’t acquire a helmet during the process of obtaining the suit. Consequently, her initial attempt is to figure out how to modify an existing helmet to fit with the suit. However, it soon becomes apparent that this approach won’t work. After all, if it did, Juliette wouldn’t need to explore more of the silo.
In this episode, Solo displays an uncommon side of himself, even lashing out at Juliette on occasion. Given his history of rebellion and solitude spanning over decades, it’s not entirely unexpected that he might react this way to various situations, considering the unusual course of his mental development. After all, he’s harboring a lot of fear and sometimes perceives things that aren’t necessarily there. Moreover, he’s concealing from Juliette the horrors of his past that span over several decades.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: I’ve got my radar up because something about this guy claiming to be Solo doesn’t sit right with me. His tale of becoming known as ‘Solo’ smells fishy, and it doesn’t take long for me to sniff out the real Solo and Tiny. If I were Juliette, I wouldn’t challenge him on his lies. This guy is a wild card, and you never know what he might do next. Best for Juliette to play along, extract herself from this mess as soon as possible, and keep her silo safe. She’s our last chance right now.
Absolutely, this story seems to be a drama, and we’re curious to learn more about Solo. What makes him tick, and how did he end up as the lone inhabitant of Silo 17? Is it truly just him, or is there something or someone else lurking out there? These are questions that intrigue us.
Sims gets a new role in Silo 18
At Silo 18, Bernard is struggling with the aftermath of Judge Meadows’ murder, which has stirred unrest among the Mechanical populace. His mind is preoccupied with finding a solution to potentially suppress any uprisings brewing below. However, he’s aware that this situation could escalate significantly.
In simpler terms, Bernard now assigns Sims the position of Judge, meaning Sims is no longer Bernard’s right-hand man or “Shadow.” This change comes as a shock to Sims, who has been loyal up until this point. However, Bernard may have made a mistake, as once Sims understands what’s happening, it could lead to Bernard’s downfall.
Beyond this, Bernie’s spouse – an IT professional herself – joins forces against him. She devises a plan to conceal Knox and Shirley, making it appear as if they are in police custody. This covert operation offers them the opportunity to escape and return to Mechanical.
Man, it’s a bummer that Sims and his missus can’t seem to see eye-to-eye. If they ever manage to build that bond of trust, watch out Bernard, they could make quite the formidable duo. But right now, living under this silo regime has left them both wary of each other, unsure who’s got their back. I guess as Sims gets more disillusioned with Bernard, he might start to trust his wife fully and join forces with her to take him down.
Knox and Shirley manage to start their journey home in Silo
Following charges for the murder of Judge Meadows, Knox and Shirley found themselves compelled to leave town, as Walker could move around more openly. Living secluded in a cave for such an extended period has made it so that people don’t recognize her, allowing her the opportunity to bide her time until she can return home safely.
Regarding Knox and Shirley, they find themselves requiring assistance from some individuals. However, when the porters prove unreliable, they are compelled to return and confront them, demanding whatever is necessary for their safe journey home. This action carries risk, but it’s less hazardous than the treacherous descent through the silo itself. They devise a mechanism enabling them to leap down the silo’s center. Their associates are stationed below to assist them in crossing over the stairs, and fortunately, they arrive just in time! The new Chief of Judicial Security is not playing games, instead showing clear intentions to eliminate them. Bernard now has a trustworthy head of Security – precisely what he needs at this critical moment.
I had concerns about Knox when he leaped off the ledge. I assumed Shirley would clear it, but given how remorseful Knox seemed for landing them in this predicament, I feared that he might not make it and fall over the edge with the faulty setup as it collapsed into the abyss. Since I know the novels, I was prepared for this scene to unfold as written, but with the significant alterations we’ve noticed so far, I was open to this part being modified too.
Delighted to observe Sheriff Billings and Hank uncovering suspicions about the cryptic communications they’ve been receiving. Given Hank’s close relationship with Knox and Shirley, it’s only natural for him to believe they wouldn’t have taken Judge Meadows’ life. I can’t help but appreciate how Billings is seeking Hank’s insights on this matter. It seems these two are becoming increasingly inquisitive, and with Bernard’s grip on them weakening as they delve deeper into the silo, it feels like a simmering rebellion is brewing – one that our enigmatic leader remains oblivious to.
Bernard finds his new potential shadow in Silo season 2, episode 5
As I delved deeper into the game’s lore, it became clear to me that Lukas had more secrets than he let on. Judge Meadows had confided in him, and I sensed an opportunity to leverage his knowledge of the outside world. So, I made a move to extract Lukas from the mines. In truth, I was putting Lukas through a test, gauging his understanding of what lay beyond our current level. I may have some insights about the past and the Red Level Relics, but there’s still much I don’t know in this ever-evolving game.
It’s clear that Lukas has uncovered something remarkable, demonstrating his potential as a Shadow character. If you’re familiar with the books, you can anticipate what lies ahead. I was eagerly waiting to see how the series would address Lukas being in the mines, and I’m captivated by the direction this plot is taking.
It seems Bernard believes that Lukas will appreciate being rescued from the mines, which might make him devoted to Bernard, doesn’t it? However, there’s an issue: Lukas discovered that Juliette was onto something as well. These two have forged a connection, and breaking it could prove challenging.
Bernard is losing connections within the silo, though. He decides to offer Dr. Nichols Juliette’s belongings. You see, he needs Dr. Nichols on his side. He needs the people to see that even Juliette’s dad is against her, but he’s lost everything. The silo has taken everything from him, and he no longer has anything to lose. This makes him a reckless man. He will do what he thinks is right, and we’ve already seen that with the decision to remove the implant and go against the Code Orange order. Bernard can’t act on that just yet, but it’s only a matter of time. That’s if he can stay in power.
Reaching the midpoint, it’s evident that many are nearing their breaking point. It won’t be much longer before the uprising begins. I find Juliette’s narrative moving a bit slowly, but we’re not being overwhelmed with events in Silo 17, so it doesn’t feel overly cumbersome. I’m keen to learn more about Solo!
